Tolls in Europe – how differently they work

Whether you have to pay for a road depends on the country you're travelling in. In Europe, there are three fundamentally different systems for this – and almost every country relies on its own combination of them.

Vignette

A flat fee for a set period (e.g. 10 days, 1 year). With it, you are allowed to use all toll-vignette roads in the country – regardless of the distance driven.

Distance-based toll

The fee is based on the distance traveled and is recorded at toll stations or electronically via a device in the vehicle (e.g. GO-Box).

Special toll

An additional fee for individual routes, tunnels, or passes – often charged in addition to the vignette or distance-based toll.

Two neighboring countries, two completely different systems: In Austria, you use a vignette – digital or as a sticker vignette, from 2027 only digital, while in Italy you take a ticket at the toll station and pay according to the distance driven. That's why it's worth informing yourself about each country before your trip.

Austria

For vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, you use a vignette in Austria: a flat fee for a fixed period – digital, linked to your license plate, or as a sticker vignette (digital only from 2027). In addition, there is also route-based toll and special toll.

Regardless of vehicle weight, you pay distance-based tolls in Italy: you take a ticket when entering and pay according to the distance driven when exiting. A special toll also applies at some tunnels and passes.
