Why do you have to pay toll charges?
Most countries in Europe levy toll charges. There is a so-called toll obligation. But what does this mean? Toll charges are levied for the use of many motorways and expressways as well as tunnels and bridges. The money generated by the toll is invested, for example, in the road network. This ensures a smooth journey on your way to your holiday. The primary areas of investment are infrastructure, traffic management and road safety, as well as environmental protection measures.
Infrastructure: construction and maintenance of roads and motorways
Road safety and traffic management: new technologies such as intelligent transport systems or toll gantries
Environmental protection: expansion of noise barriers or measures to reduce emissions
How is the toll collected?
In Albania there is no nationwide toll system. Instead, only the section (between Thumanë and Kashar) of the A1 motorway and two tunnels (Kalimash Tunnel and Llogara Tunnel) in Albania are subject to tolls. There is neither a vignette requirement nor a distance-based toll. Instead, flat-rate toll charges are levied for these toll sections. All other routes in Albania are currently free of charge. However, further sections of the A1 are set to become toll roads in the coming years.
A1 motorway (section between Thumanë and Kashar)
The amount of the toll charge is based on the vehicle category and may vary depending on the vehicle category. The following distinctions apply:

Motorhome
The cheapest way to drive on the A1 is with your motorcycle. Using the route with a motorhome is the most expensive. However, all vehicle categories involve low amounts in euros.
Toll tunnels
The only tunnels subject to tolls so far are the Kalimash Tunnel (on the A1) and the Llogara Tunnel in the south of the country. The same vehicle categories apply at the Kalimash Tunnel as on the A1 motorway section. In contrast, at the Llogara Tunnel (between Orikum and Himarë), no distinction is made between motor vehicles. Accordingly, all vehicles pay the same fee. Currently, the fee is 5 euros per vehicle (as of: 24.02.2026).
Payment of toll charges
Toll charges in Albania are paid at the toll stations. There you can pay either with cash, credit card or debit card.
