Vehicle Classes Romania
Anyone traveling to Romania by car or motorhome needs a vignette (Rovinieta) for motorways, expressways and national roads. For these vehicles, there is no distance-based toll in Romania.
Do you need a vignette?
Most vehicles in Romania require a vignette. However, there are exceptions. We provide you with an overview of which vehicle classes exist and which requirements apply to your vehicle.
Motorcycles
As a motorcyclist, you do not need a vignette. You can use the entire road network in Romania with complete peace of mind, without having to worry about toll regulations. Even at the Calafat-Vidin Danube Bridge to Bulgaria, where a special toll applies, motorcycles are exempt from the fee according to the operator.
Cars
If you want to travel to Romania with your car, you need a digital vignette.
Cars with trailer
If you want to travel to Romania with your car and an accompanying trailer, you only need a digital vignette for your car and not for your trailer.
Motorhomes
If you want to travel to Romania with a motorhome, you need a digital vignette of category A. This also applies to motorhomes registered as cars with a gross vehicle weight over 3.5 t.
Commercial vehicles
From 1 October 2026, freight vehicles with a gross vehicle weight over 3.5 t will no longer need a vignette, but will instead pay the distance-based TollRo toll. It is calculated based on kilometres driven. Buses remain in the Rovinieta system.
Vehicle classes subject to the vignette requirement
Below, the various vehicles are assigned to their respective vehicle classes. The price of the digital vignette also varies depending on the vehicle class:
Category A: cars with up to 9 seats (including with trailer) and motorhomes, including motorhomes registered as cars with a gross vehicle weight over 3.5 t
Category B: freight vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight
Category C: minibuses with 10 to 23 seats
Category D: buses with more than 23 seats
Important: special toll routes (route tolls)
Please note that special toll routes exist in Romania when travelling. Regardless of a vignette already purchased, additional fees apply for the use of special toll routes. The special toll routes include the Calafat-Vidin Danube Bridge.
