Ski Resorts in Switzerland
The Swiss Alps are among the best travel destinations in the world for skiers. With breathtaking panoramas, high snow reliability and perfectly groomed slopes, this small Alpine country attracts winter sports enthusiasts from all over the world every year. In this article, you'll learn everything about the ski resorts in Switzerland, how to get there, practical tips and activities away from the slopes.
Skiing in Switzerland: The most important information
Switzerland has more than 200 ski resorts, including well-known regions such as Zermatt, Verbier and Davos.
If you're travelling by car, you'll need a vignette for motorways and expressways, for example conveniently as a digital vignette.
The best time to go skiing in Switzerland is between December and March.
Combine skiing with activities such as winter hiking, wellness or culinary experiences.
Getting to the ski resorts in Switzerland
Switzerland has an excellently developed infrastructure. This also makes getting to the ski resorts in Switzerland easy and comfortable. Nevertheless, there are a few points to keep in mind.
General information on getting there
By car, you can conveniently enter Switzerland from Germany, Austria or Italy. The roads are generally well maintained and cleared in winter. Many ski resorts such as Zermatt, Davos or St. Moritz offer central parking options. Nevertheless, it's advisable to plan your route in advance and take wintry weather conditions into account.
Alternatively, the ski resorts in the Swiss Alps are also easily accessible by train or coach. The panoramic routes of the Rhaetian Railway or the Glacier Express are particularly well known.
Information on the toll obligation in Switzerland
A general toll obligation applies in Switzerland for motorways and expressways. The toll is levied in the form of the vignette requirement and the heavy vehicle fee. Vehicles up to 3.5 t gross weight require a vignette, while vehicles over 3.5 t gross weight must pay the heavy vehicle fee. Detailed information on the toll in Switzerland, in particular the heavy vehicle fee, can be found in our guide. If your vehicle falls under the vignette requirement, please note that only annual vignettes exist in Switzerland. This means you cannot buy short-term vignettes in Switzerland. However, your vignette must already be active before you drive onto a motorway or expressway. So here's our tip: buy your digital vignette online before you travel, so you can enjoy your holiday worry-free.
In addition to the vignette requirement and the heavy vehicle fee, there are also special toll routes in Switzerland. An additional fee is charged for using these special toll routes. You can also use car trains if you would like to avoid the Alpine pass roads. Detailed information on the special toll and on car transport by train can be found in our guide.
Vignettes are country-specific
If your route takes you through other countries, please note that vignettes are country-specific. If you would like to continue on through Austria, you will also need a vignette there (depending on the vehicle class), or you will have to pay a so-called distance-based toll. In Italy, on the other hand, there are no vignettes, so the toll is charged on-site depending on the distance travelled. Detailed information on the toll in Austria and the toll in Italy can be found in our guide.
