Penalties and Consequences

In the Czech Republic, there is a general vignette requirement. The vignette is an important instrument for financing and maintaining the road network. You can purchase the digital vignette from us. A detailed overview of whether a vignette is required and which one applies can be found in our article about tolls in the Czech Republic.

The toll obligation in the Czech Republic applies to all motor vehicles with at least four wheels that use motorways or expressways, provided the permissible gross vehicle weight does not exceed 3.5 t. Trailers and motorcycles are exempt from this requirement. Vehicles with a total weight over 3.5 t are required to pay a distance-based toll and do not need a vignette. Instead, an on-board unit (OBU) available locally must be carried. This device records the kilometres driven as well as the vehicle category and uses this information to calculate the toll amount.

There are some exceptions: Almost the entire D0 motorway as well as certain sections of the D1 and D5 can be used without a vignette.

Toll regulations are not only legally binding, but also serve to ensure a functioning transport system. Violations can result in serious financial and legal consequences. It is therefore advisable to familiarize yourself thoroughly with the toll system and to complete the necessary steps for proper registration and toll payment without delay.

Penalties for Not Having a Vignette

Driving in the Czech Republic without a valid (digital) vignette can lead to significant penalties. This section explains the amount of the fine and possible additional sanctions.

The non-payment of the toll is consistently prosecuted in the Czech Republic and can lead to substantial penalties. Toll compliance is checked both manually by the police and automatically via camera systems. Avoidance is virtually impossible, as the licence plate is automatically recorded at toll checkpoints and compared with a central database. If no valid proof is found, the responsible motorway police are notified.

A violation of the vignette requirement results in fines, the amount of which depends on the extent and duration of the infringement. In addition to financial penalties, legal consequences are also possible, which may significantly hinder further participation in road traffic.

If you are caught on toll roads without a valid vignette, a fine of up to 20,000 CZK (around 800 euros) may be imposed.

Penalties can be significantly higher in formal administrative proceedings. In such cases, the fine can amount to up to 100,000 CZK (around 4,000 euros). This may apply, for example, if an exemption from the vignette requirement is requested without being entitled to it and there is also an attempt to deceive. However, since this is difficult to prove, we generally recommend purchasing a vignette in good time.
