Penalties and Consequences Czech Republic
In the Czech Republic, there is a general vignette requirement. The vignette represents an essential instrument for financing and maintaining the road network. The toll obligation in the Czech Republic applies to all motor vehicles with at least four wheels using motorways or expressways, provided the permissible total weight does not exceed 3.5 t. Trailers and motorcycles are exempt from this requirement. Vehicles with a total weight over 3.5 t are required to pay a distance-based toll and do not need a vignette. Instead, an on-board unit device (OBU), available locally, must be carried. This device records the kilometers driven as well as the vehicle category and determines the toll amount on this basis.
There are a few exceptions: almost the entire D0 motorway, as well as partial sections of the D1 and D5, may be driven on without a vignette.
The regulations regarding the toll obligation are not only legally binding but also serve to ensure a functioning transport system. A violation can result in serious financial and legal consequences. It is therefore advisable to familiarize yourself thoroughly with the toll system and to promptly take the necessary steps for proper registration and payment of the toll.
Penalties for not having a vignette
Driving without a valid (digital) vignette in the Czech Republic can result in significant sanctions. The amount of the fine as well as possible further penalties are explained in this section.
Non-payment of the toll is consistently prosecuted in the Czech Republic and can lead to severe penalties. Compliance with the toll obligation is checked both manually by the police and automatically by camera systems. Evasion is practically impossible, as the license plate is automatically recorded at toll gantries and matched against a central database. If proof is missing, the relevant highway police are notified.
A violation of the vignette requirement results in fines, the amount of which depends on the extent and duration of the infringement. In addition to financial sanctions, legal consequences are also possible, which can significantly complicate further participation in road traffic.
If you are found on toll roads without a valid vignette, a fine of up to 20,000 CZK (approximately 800 euros) can be imposed.
The penalties are significantly higher in formal criminal proceedings. In this case, the fine can amount to up to 100,000 CZK (approx. 4,000 euros). This applies, for example, when an exemption from the vignette requirement is requested without any entitlement to it, while an attempt at deception is also present. However, since this is difficult to prove, we generally recommend purchasing a vignette in good time.
