Vignette requirement in Switzerland
In Switzerland, a vignette requirement applies to cover the maintenance costs of national roads. Unlike in many neighboring countries, there are no short validity periods: the Swiss vignette is sold exclusively as an annual vignette, valid from December 1 of the previous year to January 31 of the following year.
Digital vignette (e-vignette) instead of sticker vignette
Since August 1, 2023, in addition to the classic sticker vignette, there has also been a digital e-vignette that is directly linked to your license plate – completely without a sticker and without any hassle in the event of a vehicle change or windshield damage. With the Europe toll flat rate, you exclusively book the digital e-vignette, which becomes valid after registration confirmation, usually within a few minutes.
Which vehicles require a vignette?
Unlike in many other countries, neither motorcycles nor trailers are exempt from the vignette requirement in Switzerland:
- Cars, motorhomes, vans and work vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight require a vignette.
- Motorcycles are also subject to the vignette requirement.
- For a combination of a towing vehicle and a trailer, both vehicles each require their own vignette.
Heavy vehicles (over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight)
Vehicles with a total weight of over 3.5 t are exempt from the vignette obligation, but are instead subject to the performance-related heavy vehicle fee (LSVA) or the flat-rate heavy vehicle fee (PSVA). This separate system is not part of the vignette flat rate offered here.
Fines for missing vignette
Anyone driving on toll-sticker-required national roads in Switzerland without a valid toll sticker must expect a fine of 200 Swiss francs, equivalent to around 213 euros.
