What is a special toll?

A special toll is levied for special toll routes, which are often tunnels or mountain pass roads and are associated with higher construction and maintenance costs. The construction of tunnels leads to greater technical challenges, which incur additional costs through specialized machinery and technologies.

Who has to pay the special toll?

An additional fee must be paid for the use of the special toll routes in Bulgaria. Although special toll routes are subject neither to the vignette requirement nor to the distance-based toll, they are nevertheless subject to tolls. This means that regardless of whether you have already purchased a vignette or paid the distance-based (also called route-dependent) toll, you must pay an additional amount for certain tunnels and mountain pass roads.

Accordingly, every vehicle owner must pay the special toll as soon as a special toll route is used. It should be noted that most special toll routes can only be reached via access roads subject to the vignette requirement or access roads subject to the distance-based toll. Therefore, regardless of the special toll route, it makes sense to purchase a vignette or an electronic transmitter device for the distance-based toll.

Which routes does the special toll apply to?

The special toll routes in Bulgaria include the Danube crossings. The Danube flows through Romania and Bulgaria, but at the same time separates the two countries from each other. If you want to use one of the numerous bridges or the ferry to cross, additional fees apply.
