Why do you have to pay toll fees?
Most countries in Europe charge toll fees. There is a so-called toll obligation. But what does that mean? Toll amounts are charged for the use of certain routes, tunnels, and bridges. The money collected through the toll is invested in the road network, allowing you to enjoy a smooth journey. The primary areas of investment are infrastructure, traffic management and road safety, as well as environmental protection measures.
Infrastructure: construction and maintenance of roads and motorways
Road safety and traffic management: new technologies such as intelligent traffic systems or toll gantries
Environmental protection: expansion of noise barriers or measures to reduce emissions
How is the toll collected?
The toll can be collected in various forms. These include the vignette obligation, the distance-based toll, and special toll routes.
Vignette obligation: cars (with trailer) & motorhomes up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight
Through the vignette obligation, toll fees are charged that are not calculated based on kilometres, but correspond to a flat rate that varies depending on the duration of travel. Accordingly, you purchase a digital vignette with us before your trip. Depending on the vehicle class, the price of a vignette may vary. By purchasing the vignette, you make a one-time purchase that allows you to drive on all toll routes. The vignette obligation applies in Slovakia to vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight. Motorcycles are exempt from the vignette obligation, meaning you neither need to purchase a vignette for your motorcycle nor pay the distance-based toll. Distance-based toll: vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight
The distance-based toll applies in Slovakia to vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight. Unlike the vignette obligation, the distance-based toll is not a flat rate, but varies depending on the road category, route length (number of kilometres), vehicle category (weight class and number of axles), and CO2 emission class. Accordingly, the amount of the toll fee can vary greatly. The distance-based toll is collected with the help of a transmitter device, the so-called on-board unit. The distance-based toll applies in Slovakia on expressways, motorways, and some selected sections of class 1 and class 2 roads. By the way: for motorhomes, no distance-based toll needs to be paid regardless of weight, meaning even if your motorhome weighs over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, you only need to purchase a vignette.
Special toll: Does not exist in Slovakia!
