Most countries in Europe charge toll fees. There is a so-called toll obligation. But what does that mean? Toll charges are collected for the use of certain roads, tunnels and bridges. The revenue generated from tolls is invested in the road network and thus enables you to enjoy a smooth journey. The primary areas of investment are infrastructure, traffic management and road safety as well as environmental protection measures.
Toll fees can be collected in different ways. These include the vignette requirement, the distance-based toll and special toll sections.
Under the vignette system, toll fees are not calculated based on kilometres driven but are charged as a flat rate that varies depending on the duration of your trip. Therefore, you purchase a digital vignette from us before your journey. Depending on the vehicle class, the price of a vignette may vary. By purchasing the vignette, you make a one-time payment that allows you to use all toll roads. The vignette requirement applies in Slovakia to vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW. Motorcycles are exempt from the vignette requirement, meaning you do not need to purchase a vignette or pay a distance-based toll for your motorcycle. Further information on the vehicle classes can be found in our guide.
The distance-based toll in Slovakia applies to vehicles over 3.5 t GVW. Unlike the vignette requirement, the distance-based toll is not a flat rate, but varies depending on the road category, route length (number of kilometres), vehicle category (weight class and number of axles) and CO2 emission class. Therefore, the amount of the toll fee can vary significantly. The distance-based toll is collected using a transmitting device, the so-called on-board unit. The distance-based toll applies in Slovakia on expressways, motorways and selected sections of first- and second-class roads. By the way: Motorhomes are not required to pay the distance-based toll regardless of their weight, meaning that even if your motorhome exceeds 3.5 t GVW, you only need to purchase a vignette.
There are no special toll sections in Slovakia. However, there are special toll routes in other countries, such as Austria. If you would like to learn more about special tolls, even though you do not need to consider them for Slovakia, please take a look at our guide.
