How is the toll collected in Slovakia?
The toll in Slovakia is collected in two ways: through the vignette requirement for cars, motorhomes and vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW and through the distance-based toll for trucks and buses over 3.5 t GVW. There are no special toll routes, i.e. additional charges for individual tunnels or mountain pass roads, in Slovakia. The following table shows which toll charges apply to your vehicle. For a car and trailer combination, the total weight is what counts: up to 3.5 t GVW, one vignette for the towing vehicle is sufficient; above that, you also need a vignette for the trailer. For motorhomes, it is not the weight but the vehicle class that decides: motorhomes registered as passenger cars (class M1) only ever need the vignette, even over 3.5 t. The class is stated in your vehicle registration certificate (field J).
On which roads does the toll apply in Slovakia?
The vignette requirement applies on the signposted motorways (D) and expressways (R). Toll-free sections are marked with the sign “BEZ ÚHRADY”. Ordinary country roads can be used by cars without a vignette. Around Bratislava, many sections are toll-free, for example the D4 bypass. Just past the border, however, the requirement starts quickly: coming from Kittsee, about 2 km of the D4 up to the Jarovce junction require a vignette, and coming from Rajka, around 9 km of the D2 up to Jarovce. Who needs a digital vignette in Slovakia?
In Slovakia, all multi-track vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW as well as all vehicles registered as passenger cars (class M1), including motorhomes over 3.5 t, need a vignette. Under the vignette requirement, toll charges are not calculated according to the kilometers driven but as a flat fee that varies depending on the length of your trip. Only the digital vignette (e-vignette) is still available: sticker vignettes no longer exist, the vignette is bought online and registered to your vehicle's license plate.
With the Vignette Flat Rate, you receive your digital vignette for Slovakia and can use all roads subject to the vignette requirement. You choose the start date yourself; it can be up to 60 days in the future. The vignette is valid from 0:00 on the start date until 23:59 on the last day. Which vehicles are exempt from the vignette requirement in Slovakia?
Motorcycles and trikes do not need a vignette. Also exempt are emergency vehicles of the police, fire brigade and ambulance service as well as historic vehicles and vehicles of people with severe disabilities, although most of these exemptions only apply after registration with the Slovak motorway company NDS. Electric and hydrogen vehicles, on the other hand, are not exempt.
For a motorhome, the vignette always applies as long as it is registered as a passenger car (class M1), even over 3.5 t GVW. For a car with a trailer, one vignette for the towing vehicle is sufficient up to a total weight of 3.5 t GVW; above that, you need a second vignette for the trailer at the same price.
What happens without a vignette in Slovakia?
Anyone who drives on roads subject to the vignette requirement without a valid vignette must expect a penalty. If the offence is detected by camera, the vehicle keeper receives a notice for 150 €; anyone who pays within 15 days only pays two thirds, i.e. 100 €. During a police check, fines of 50 to 200 € are possible on the spot, and up to 500 € in administrative offence proceedings.
Checks are carried out using stationary and mobile license plate recognition, together with the police. The penalty cannot be avoided from abroad either: the notice is sent to the vehicle keeper by post. Find out more under Penalties and consequences in Slovakia.
How much is the toll for cars in Slovakia?
The car toll in Slovakia is a vignette requirement: the motorway charge is not calculated per kilometer driven but as a flat fee for a fixed period. The toll for the 10-day vignette is 10.80 €. The following table shows the official 2026 prices for cars and motorhomes; according to an announcement by the Slovak Ministry of Transport, they will also remain unchanged in 2027.

Is there a distance-based toll in Slovakia?
Yes, for trucks and buses over 3.5 t GVW. Unlike the vignette, this is not a flat fee: the charge is calculated as a rate per kilometer multiplied by the distance driven. The rate depends on the road category, the gross vehicle weight, the vehicle type (truck or bus) as well as the EURO and CO₂ emission class, and for trucks from 12 t also on the number of axles. These vehicles are exempt from the vignette requirement. Motorhomes registered as passenger cars (class M1) are excluded and only need the vignette.
The toll is collected electronically and via satellite through the emyto system. For this you need an on-board unit (OBU) with which your vehicle is registered in the toll system. The distance-based toll applies on motorways, expressways and selected first- and second-class roads. On some of these roads the rate per kilometer is 0 €, but the on-board unit is still mandatory there.
Please note: Slovakia is switching its toll system on 1 January 2027. According to the operator, vehicles must be re-registered for this (from 1 December 2026) and need new on-board units; the rates remain unchanged.
