Vignette and Preparation: Everything You Need to Know for Your Trip to Hungary

Before setting off for fascinating Hungary, it is crucial to find out thoroughly about the motorway vignette requirement in the country and make the appropriate preparations. In Hungary, a vignette requirement applies on almost all motorways and expressways; only a few sections are toll-free. This vignette fee is charged to finance the maintenance and expansion of the road network. There are various types of vignettes, which differ depending on the duration of the trip and the type of vehicle. Nationwide, there are day, 10-day (officially "weekly vignette"), monthly and annual vignettes, as well as annual vignettes for individual counties and, since 2026, a regional M1 annual vignette.

Officially, you can obtain the vignette at petrol stations, at sales points near the border and in the operator's online shop. The Hungarian 10-day vignette is already included in our flat rate. It is advisable to purchase the vignette in advance to avoid waiting times at the borders and to save time on your trip. When buying online, you receive the vignette in digital form, which is directly linked to your vehicle's license plate, allowing for simple and straightforward use.

The prices for the vignettes vary depending on the type of vehicle and validity period. It is important to find out about current prices and validity periods in advance to avoid unpleasant surprises. When purchasing, you select the first day of validity; if purchased on the same day, the vignette is valid from the time of purchase. The 10-day vignette is valid until midnight on the ninth following day, and the monthly vignette until the same calendar day of the following month.

In addition to the vignette, you should also carry other important documents for your trip to Hungary. These include your valid passport or ID card, vehicle documents and, if applicable, a Green Insurance Card. It is advisable to make copies of these documents and keep them in a safe place in case the originals are lost.

Day 1: Budapest – The Pearl of the Danube

The first day of our trip through Hungary takes us to the fascinating capital Budapest, considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, majestically situated on the banks of the Danube. Budapest, often referred to as the "Pearl of the Danube", offers a fascinating mix of history, culture and architecture that captivates every visitor.

Our day begins early in the morning, as we watch the first rays of sunshine rise over the Danube and set off along the riverside promenade. From here we enjoy a breathtaking view of Budapest's famous landmarks, including the imposing Chain Bridge, the majestic Parliament building and the picturesque Buda Castle, which towers high above the city.

After this first impressive experience, we set off to explore the various districts of Buda and Pest in more detail. In Buda, located on the western side of the Danube, we discover the city's rich history and explore the narrow streets and charming squares around Buda Castle. We visit historic sights such as Matthias Church, which impresses with its colorful tiles and Gothic style, and the Fisherman's Bastion, which enchants us with its breathtaking view over the Danube.

In Pest, the lively eastern part of the city, we experience modern Budapest with its elegant boulevards, busy squares and vibrant street cafés. We stroll along the splendid Andrássy Avenue, a tree-lined promenade, and admire the imposing turn-of-the-century buildings. At Heroes' Square, one of the largest squares in Europe, we marvel at the monumental Millennium Column and the impressive museums surrounding it.

After an eventful morning, we decide to take a relaxing boat trip on the Danube to experience Budapest from a new perspective. While sitting comfortably on deck admiring the passing scenery, we learn more about the city's history and culture from our knowledgeable tour guide. We pass majestic bridges, historic buildings and picturesque riverside landscapes and let ourselves be enchanted by the beauty and elegance of this historic city.

In the evening, we round off the day at a traditional Hungarian restaurant, where we enjoy the delicious local cuisine and indulge in the aromas and flavors of Hungarian specialties. We sample traditional dishes such as goulash, lángos and pancakes, and are impressed by the warm hospitality of the Hungarians.
