Before your departure, you should first check which vehicle category your vehicle belongs to in order to purchase the correct vignette and avoid possible fines. In addition, there are other important points to keep in mind when travelling to Slovenia. Below you will find all the relevant information in a compact format.
Vehicles up to 3.5 t MAM: A digital vignette is required to use Slovenian motorways and expressways. Without a valid vignette, significant fines may apply.
Borderline cases: For vehicles such as SUVs, vans or campervans, it is advisable to check the relevant dimensions if in doubt, in order to ensure correct classification between categories 2a and 3a. Detailed information on vehicle categories can be found in a dedicated guide.
Vehicles over 3.5 t MAM: For these vehicles, a distance-based toll must be paid, which is recorded via an on-board unit (DarsGo device).
Once the applicable vehicle category has been determined, you can proceed with the booking of the digital vignette. The validity period can be flexibly adjusted to suit your travel duration, for example as a 7-day, 1-month, 6-month or 12-month vignette. Make sure to enter the licence plate correctly. After purchase, you will receive a confirmation by email, which you should ideally save digitally or print out so you can present it quickly during checks.
Careful route planning is especially recommended during holiday periods. Find out in advance about heavily used roads and possible traffic jams, and plan alternative routes where necessary. Up-to-date traffic information is available via radio stations. With the route planner you can check whether your route passes through special toll roads such as the Karawanken Tunnel. For these roads, a special toll is charged in addition to the vignette or distance-based toll. Proof of payment should also be retained for these.
In addition to route planning, a complete packing list is also essential. Remember to bring a national ID card or passport, your driving licence, and your vehicle registration document. It is also recommended to bring proof of insurance in the form of an international insurance card (green card).
Equally important is the equipment in your vehicle. Before setting off, make sure a warning triangle, high-visibility vests for all occupants, and first aid supplies are on board. It is also advisable to carry some cash in euros in addition to credit cards.
