Special Toll in Slovenia
The special toll applies to certain special toll routes. These are usually tunnels or mountain pass roads, whose construction and maintenance are associated with particularly high costs. Tunnel projects in particular pose major technical challenges and require the use of specialized machinery as well as modern technologies. These increased expenses make a separate toll levy necessary.
Who has to pay the special toll?
An additional fee must be paid for using special toll routes. Although these routes are not part of the vignette requirement or the distance-based toll, they remain independently subject to tolls.
This means: Regardless of whether you have already purchased a vignette or paid the distance-based toll (also called route-dependent toll), an additional fee is charged for certain tunnels or mountain pass roads. The special toll must therefore be paid by all vehicle owners as soon as the relevant route is used.
Please also note that most special toll routes can be reached via access roads subject to the vignette requirement or subject to the distance-based toll. In practice, this means that, in addition to the special toll, you also need either a valid vignette or – for vehicles over 3.5 t – an electronic on-board unit for collecting the distance-based toll.
Which routes does the special toll apply to?
In Slovenia there is one special toll route for which an additional fee is charged: the Karawanken Tunnel A11, which is operated by ASFINAG and DARS and connects Austria with Slovenia.
The amount of the fee depends on the respective vehicle class. Payment can be made on site with cash or credit card. Alternatively, digital toll tickets can be purchased – for example through ADAC sales points. With a digital toll ticket, you can use the green-marked toll lanes and payment at the toll station is not required.
