In Slovakia, a toll sticker requirement applies. In this article, we'll explain to what extent this applies and whether you need a toll sticker. However, the main focus is on the fines and consequences you can expect if you don't have a toll sticker. You can find other traffic rules and the penalties for non-compliance here.

The Most Important Facts

  • The toll sticker requirement applies on all motorways and expressways in Slovakia.

  • The amount of the fine for not having a valid toll sticker can vary greatly.

  • If you pay the fine quickly, you can get away with a discount.

  • Remember to carry the proof of purchase of your toll sticker with you.

  • Check all the details before purchasing a toll sticker.

Do I need a toll sticker for my vehicle?

The toll sticker requirement applies to vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW. It's important to note that motorcycles are exempt from the toll sticker requirement and do not need a toll sticker. In addition, motorhomes are a special case, as they need a toll sticker regardless of their weight (i.e. even if they weigh more than 3.5 t GVW). Furthermore, for combinations (car + trailer), it should be noted that for a weight under 3.5 t GVW, only the toll sticker on the car is required, whereas for a total weight of over 3.5 t GVW, an additional toll sticker must be purchased for the trailer. Trucks with a total weight of over 3.5 t GVW must therefore also pay the distance-based toll, and the toll sticker requirement no longer applies.

Motorcycles are exempt from the toll sticker requirement and do not have to pay any fees for using motorways and expressways!

Tips for preparing for a trip to Slovakia

Preparation for a trip to Slovakia should be done carefully, especially with regard to the toll sticker requirement. The costs vary depending on the type of vehicle.

So find out in advance whether you primarily intend to use motorways and expressways, as you will then need a toll sticker, and carry the proof of purchase of the toll sticker with you. Good trip preparation also includes knowing about the necessary safety precautions and the equipment that must be carried in the vehicle. Fire extinguisher, warning vests, warning triangle and first aid kit should be checked before starting your trip to ensure they meet legal requirements.

It's also advisable to familiarize yourself with the most important traffic rules to avoid unpleasant surprises. This preparation not only ensures a stress-free trip but also helps avoid possible fines and penalties.

What does non-compliance with the toll sticker requirement mean for you?

Since Slovakia has a toll sticker requirement and its enforcement is usually carried out automatically, driving without a valid toll sticker on most Slovak roads (there are also a few road and route sections without a corresponding toll sticker or toll requirement) constitutes a violation of the law.

It's not possible to avoid the toll sticker control systems. These continuously monitor the roads subject to the toll sticker requirement using a camera-based system. The same applies to vehicles that are not subject to the toll sticker requirement but are subject to the distance-based toll. The transponder (transmitter, on-board unit) installed in the vehicle records the kilometers driven, and the cameras automatically detect the transponder.

Even if you leave Slovakia, that doesn't mean your fine is cancelled. Automatic checks and EU-wide cooperation make prosecution possible abroad. It may even be that you only find out you drove without a toll sticker once the fine notice arrives in your mailbox.

Penalties for driving without a toll sticker

The amount of the fine can vary greatly. It can range anywhere between 50-500 euros. Always make sure to carry your proof of purchase with you as evidence that you purchased a valid toll sticker.

Police check

Police check on a motorway

If you're caught in a police check without a toll sticker, that's not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, you'll often get off more cheaply than with a fine notice. This is partly because the police can impose the fine directly on the spot, saving a lot of bureaucratic effort. You can either pay the police fine directly in cash or transfer it within a specified period. Here too, the amount of the fine depends on various criteria, such as how long you've been driving without a valid toll sticker. In the case of a police check, the fine is usually between 50 and 200 euros.

Automatic detection

With automatic detection, clearly more effort is required to notify you of the fine. This official procedure is therefore likely more expensive than a police check. In this case, you'll have to pay between 150 and 500 euros (usually closer to 150 euros).

Lower fine due to quick payment

The district court has 60 days to initiate the fine proceedings. Normally, you should also receive the notice within these 60 days. You have 30 days from receipt to pay the money. If you transfer the money within 15 days, you're usually only required to pay ⅔ of the amount. So it's worth transferring the money quickly. For an amount of 150 euros, you would then only have to pay 100 euros.

Avoid the fine completely by purchasing retroactively

With luck, you can avoid the fine by quickly purchasing a toll sticker retroactively on the same day you drove without a valid one. If the system hasn't yet matched your license plate with the registered toll stickers earlier that day, and you quickly purchase a toll sticker before your license plate is matched, you could avoid the fine. From the next day onwards, this no longer works, as toll stickers can only be purchased for the current day and the days following.

Is your toll sticker even valid?

Sometimes it's not clear why a fine was imposed. In this case, you should review your information beforehand and check that everything is correct before purchasing the toll sticker. Problems could arise with the following points:

  • Incorrect date on the toll sticker

  • Incorrect license plate on the toll sticker

  • Confusing Slovakia and Slovenia

  • Not using an official/reputable website

  • Selecting the wrong time period

  • Not having looked into the topic of toll stickers

The Europamaut team wishes you a pleasant journey

The fine for driving without a valid toll sticker is significantly higher than buying a toll sticker. So if you buy a toll sticker and have checked all your entered details, you're on the safe side. Even if you want to avoid the roads subject to the toll sticker requirement, construction sites or new roads could throw a wrench in your plans. If you want a stress-free trip and no fine notice waiting for you, we recommend purchasing a toll sticker for Slovakia.

Avoiding the toll is a challenge and time-consuming anyway, since all motorways and expressways already require a toll sticker. Nevertheless, you'll see a lot of nature and side roads that you probably wouldn't have seen by driving on motorways and other roads subject to the toll sticker requirement. You'll also be spared the stressful situations on the motorway with aggressive drivers. Either way, the digital toll sticker is the safest bet.
