Do I need a toll sticker for my vehicle?
The toll sticker requirement applies to vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight. It's important to note that motorcycles are exempt from the toll sticker requirement and don't need one. In addition, motorhomes are a special case, as they require a toll sticker regardless of their weight (i.e. even if they weigh over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight). Furthermore, for combinations (car + trailer), please note that for a weight under 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, only the toll sticker on the car is required, whereas for a total weight over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, an additional toll sticker must be purchased for the trailer. Trucks with a total weight over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight must therefore also pay the distance-based toll, and the toll sticker requirement no longer applies.
Motorcycles are exempt from the toll sticker requirement and do not have to pay fees to use motorways and expressways!
Tips for preparing for a trip to Slovakia
Preparation for a trip to Slovakia should be done carefully, especially with regard to the toll sticker requirement. The costs vary depending on the vehicle type.
So find out in advance whether you primarily intend to use motorways and expressways, since in that case you will need a toll sticker, and carry the proof of purchase for the toll sticker with you. Good trip preparation also includes knowledge of the necessary safety precautions and the equipment that must be carried in the vehicle. Fire extinguishers, warning vests, warning triangles, and first-aid kits should be checked before the start of the trip to ensure they meet legal requirements.
It's also advisable to familiarize yourself with the most important traffic rules in order to avoid unpleasant surprises. This preparation not only ensures a stress-free trip but also helps avoid potential fines and penalties.
What does non-compliance with the toll sticker requirement mean for you?
Since Slovakia has a toll sticker requirement and enforcement is usually carried out automatically, driving without a valid toll sticker on most Slovak roads (there are also a few road and route sections without a corresponding toll sticker or toll requirement) constitutes a violation of the law.
It is not possible to avoid the toll sticker control systems. These continuously monitor the roads subject to the toll sticker requirement using a camera-based system. The same applies to vehicles that are not subject to the toll sticker requirement but are subject to the distance-based toll. The transponder (transmitter, on-board unit) installed in the vehicle records the kilometers driven, and the cameras automatically detect the transponder.
Even if you leave Slovakia, that does not mean your fine is void. Automatic controls and EU-wide cooperation make enforcement possible abroad. It may even be the case that you only find out you drove without a toll sticker when the fine notice arrives in your mailbox.
Penalties for driving without a toll sticker
The amount of the fine can vary greatly. It can be anywhere between 50-500 euros. Always make sure to carry your proof of purchase with you as evidence that you purchased a valid toll sticker.
Police check
If you are stopped in a police check without a toll sticker, that's not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, you often get off cheaper than with a fine notice. This is partly because the police can impose the fine directly on the spot, saving a lot of bureaucratic effort. You can either pay the police fine directly in cash or transfer it within a specified period. Here too, the amount of the fine depends on various criteria, such as how long you've already been traveling without a valid toll sticker. In the case of a police check, the fine is usually between 50 and 200 euros.
Automatic detection
With automatic detection, clearly more effort is required to notify you of the fine. This makes the official process likely more expensive than a police check. In that case, you would have to pay between 150 and 500 euros (usually closer to 150 euros).
Lower fine through prompt payment
The district court has 60 days to initiate the fine proceedings. Normally, you should also receive the notice within these 60 days. You have 30 days from receipt to pay the amount. If you transfer the money within 15 days, you are usually only required to pay ⅔ of the amount. So it's worth transferring the money promptly. For an amount of 150 euros, you would then only have to pay 100 euros.
Completely avoiding the fine through a subsequent purchase
With luck, you may be able to avoid the fine by quickly purchasing a toll sticker retroactively on the same day you drove without a valid one. If the system hasn't yet matched your license plate with the registered toll stickers for that day, and you quickly purchase a toll sticker before your license plate is matched, you could avoid the fine. This no longer works from the next day onward, as toll stickers can only be purchased for the current day and the days following it.
Is your toll sticker even valid?
Sometimes it's not clear why a fine was imposed. In this case, you should review your information again beforehand and check that everything is correct before purchasing the toll sticker. The following points could cause problems:
