Even though Hungary is not particularly well known for its ski resorts and many winter sports enthusiasts head to Austria or Italy, you shouldn’t miss Hungary’s ski regions! The various ski areas are especially well suited for beginners and families. While the skiing doesn’t take place in high alpine mountains, Hungary’s smaller ski regions with their slopes are ideal for newcomers.

Mátraszentistván Sípark
This ski resort is located in the Mátra Mountains and therefore lies northeast of Budapest. That means you can easily combine your ski stay with a trip to Budapest. Hungary’s capital is only about 110 km from the ski area, so by car it takes no longer than around two hours. The ski region lies at an altitude of 674 to 822 m and features 10 slopes across a total of 4.3 km. The ski season starts in late December and ends in late March.
Ski and Snowboard Adventure
The ski area is not only suitable for beginners but also appealing to more advanced skiers. In this winter paradise you can explore both blue and red runs and discover the snow park. The snow park is particularly interesting for action-loving snowboarders who want an extra dose of adrenaline. There is also the option of night skiing. For the little ones in your family, the children’s area is ideal, including magic carpets and a practice slope. You can also brush up your skills at the local ski school.
Other Activities
Besides a new ski adventure, there are other activities you can enjoy in this ski area. These include winter sledging or winter hikes as well as snowshoe hikes. You can also take a break from the cold season and relax in one of the thermal baths.
Kékestető
This ski area is also located in the Mátra Mountains and likewise in northern Hungary. The highest point of the ski region lies at 1,014 m on Hungary’s highest mountain. The nearest town is only a few kilometres away and can easily be reached by car. The town of Gyöngyös sits at the foot of the Mátra Mountains and impresses with its baroque appearance. In addition, the country’s capital is not far from the Kékestető ski area either—Budapest can be reached within two hours, where you can explore the city.
The ski season usually runs from late December to late February because this ski area does not have artificial snowmaking. That’s why you should check current weather conditions before your trip. In some years the season may be longer or shorter. There are only two slopes, but the ski area impresses visitors with its natural setting and winter charm.
Ski and Snowboard Adventure
The ski area may be small, but it offers a great opportunity for a ski adventure. You can use the long run, which is rated as intermediate, or choose the shorter run, which is gentler and therefore ideal for beginners. Night skiing is not available in this ski area.
Other Activities
Even though there are no official toboggan runs, you can still go sledging in this ski region. The same applies to snowshoeing. There are no guided tours, but in good weather you can use the usual hiking trails—just note that you’ll need to bring your own equipment. This ski region in the Mátra Mountains can be especially worthwhile for hiking enthusiasts. Follow the 3 km hiking route from Kékestető to Mátraháza and enjoy impressive mountain views. You should also visit the panorama tower on the summit and take in the winter landscape.
Visegrád – Nagyvillám
The Visegrád ski area is located in the Danube Bend in northern Hungary and is much closer to the country’s capital. Budapest is only 45 km away, so a city trip to Budapest can be perfectly combined with your ski adventure. The small ski region lies at around 325 to 378 m. Visegrád is ideal for beginners and can also be used for a day trip. So if you’re travelling to Budapest in winter but would like to explore the mountains as well, you can easily plan a short ski stay in Visegrád. There are six slopes in total. The ski season runs from late December to early March.
Ski and Snowboard Adventure
The six slopes are particularly suitable for beginners and families with younger children. The difficulty levels range from easy to intermediate. For that reason, this ski area is less recommended for professional skiers and snowboarders. There is also a practice slope for beginners and a ski school that can teach you the basics.
Other Activities
Away from the slopes, you can also enjoy sledging and use the official toboggan hill for a bit of family fun. In addition, you can experience winter hikes with impressive views. Not far away you’ll also find the well-known Visegrád Castle, a medieval ruin overlooking the Danube. The Royal Palace of Visegrád is also worth seeing.
Dobogókő
The Dobogókő ski area is located in the Pilis Mountains and is also not far from Budapest. You only need to cover 40 km to get from the ski area to the capital. This means you can combine your ski holiday with a city trip here as well. The ski region lies at around 699 m and therefore at the highest point of the Pilis Mountains. Dobogókő is considered Hungary’s oldest ski resort and is open from January to late February. It offers easy to intermediate runs.
Ski and Snowboard Adventure
The ski area is very well suited for families and beginners. In Dobogókő you can use two runs and also practise your ski skills on the training slope. There is also a ski school, which is ideal for beginners to gain the basics for future snow adventures. The slopes are blue and red, which makes this ski area less interesting for professional skiers—yet all the more relaxed for beginners. Night skiing is not available here, and you should note that there is no artificial snowmaking. Therefore, you should check in advance whether the ski area is currently open.
Other Activities
In Dobogókő you can also try sledging or go on winter hikes through the Pilis Mountains. The Thirring Rocks route and the trail to the Ferenczy Rocks are particularly popular. As in the Kékestető ski area, you can go snowshoeing. However, please note that there are no guided tours—in good weather conditions you can use the usual hiking trails, but you’ll need to bring your own equipment.
Eplény – Nordica Síaréna
This ski area is located in Heves County and therefore also in northern Hungary. Let yourself be enchanted by this winter sports area at an altitude of 333 to 509 m and discover the total 7.7 km of slopes. This ski region is considered one of the most modern winter sports facilities in the country and is open from early December to late March. A special advantage: Eplény has artificial snowmaking, so the ski season is significantly longer than in Dobogókő or Kékestető.

The various runs give you the chance to explore easy, intermediate and challenging slopes, offering something for every level. You can also attend a ski school here to refresh your skills. In addition, you can enjoy the snowboard park, which provides excitement with halfpipes and jumps. What’s more, you can also take part in night skiing in this region.
Other Activities
Away from the slopes, you can explore nature on winter hikes or snowshoe hikes. Even though there are no official snowshoe tours, it is certainly possible in this area. It’s best to bring your own equipment. If you don’t have any, you should ask the rental service before you arrive whether equipment is available to rent. If you want to enjoy the view but don’t want to cover a long distance on a winter hike, you can catch a unique panoramic view from the cable lift (Ámos-hegyi lift). You can also sled or toboggan here, even though there are no official hills, simply use flat areas for some sledging fun.
