The vignette requirement explained

Do I need a vignette for Hungary?

What is the Hungary e-vignette and where is it valid?

The digital vignette for Hungary (Hungarian "e-matrica", or e-vignette for short) is registered online against your license plate, with no sticker at all – there is no adhesive vignette. The Hungary motorway vignette is valid on the motorways and expressways listed by the operator (from 2026 Magyar Közút Nonprofit Zrt., toll division) in its official list, for example on the entire M0 around Budapest and on the M1, M3, M5, M6 and M7 motorways. It doesn't matter whether you're just passing through or staying longer. Cars do not need a vignette on any other roads. Since January 1, 2026, the M6 up to the border crossing at Ivándárda has also required a vignette. Hungary does not charge a special toll for individual bridges or tunnels.

Which vehicles need a vignette?

The vignette requirement applies to cars, motorcycles, vans and motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW, and since 1 January 2026 also to all heavier motorhomes. Hungary distinguishes the categories D1 (cars and motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW with at most seven seats), D1M (motorcycle), D2 (all other vehicles, for example vans) and U (trailers behind a D2 vehicle):

Motorcycle Vignette D1M Special toll Does not exist
Car (up to 3.5 t GVW, up to 7 seats) Vignette D1 Special toll Does not exist
Motorhome up to 3.5 t GVW, up to 7 seats Vignette D1 Special toll Does not exist
Trailer behind a D1 vehicle Vignette Not required Special toll Does not exist
Van, car with 8 or more seats, motorhome over 3.5 t GVW Vignette D2 Special toll Does not exist
Trailer behind a D2 vehicle Vignette U Special toll Does not exist
Truck / bus (over 3.5 t GVW) Vignette No vignette Special toll Does not exist

A trailer or caravan behind a category D1 vehicle does not need its own vignette; behind a D2 vehicle you additionally need the U vignette. Motorhomes belong to category D1 if they have at most 3.5 t GVW and are registered for at most seven people, otherwise to category D2. The details in the vehicle registration document are what counts. Trucks and buses over 3.5 t GVW pay the distance-based HU-GO toll instead of the vignette; it is not part of the Vignette Flat Rate. There is no special toll for individual bridges or tunnels in Hungary.

The euro guide value is a value rounded to the full cent based on the current exchange rate (currently 365.21 HUF per euro) and fluctuates with the exchange rate. The 2026 annual vignette is valid until 31 January 2027. Motorcycles receive annual and county vignettes as a D1 product. The Vignette Flat Rate refers only to the 10-day vignette in category D1. The price of the vignette to which the Vignette Flat Rate refers is highlighted in green.

When is the e-vignette valid and how is it checked?

The digital vignette is valid as soon as the registration confirmation has been received, usually within a few minutes. The 10-day vignette is valid on the start day plus nine following days. Checks are carried out based on license plate, country of registration and vehicle category, including on-the-spot checks where you have to stop. The free validity check further down shows whether a valid vignette is registered for your license plate.

What are the penalties for driving without a valid vignette?

Since 1 January 2026, anyone driving on a toll road without a valid vignette pays a surcharge of 27,790 HUF (approx. 76,09 €) if they pay within 60 days, and 95,730 HUF (approx. 262,12 €) after that. For a vignette of the wrong, lower category, the amounts are 15,530 HUF (approx. 42,52 €) or, after 60 days, 49,190 HUF (approx. 134,69 €). Make sure, therefore, that your vignette is valid before you drive onto the motorway.
