Vehicle Classes Czech Republic
If you want to travel to the Czech Republic, you must purchase a vignette or pay a distance-based toll in order to be able to use the motorways in the Czech Republic. We give you an overview of whether you can simply order a vignette for your vehicle conveniently from home with us, or whether you need to purchase a transmission device for the distance-based toll at the toll stations on site.
Do you need a vignette?
There are various vehicle classes that fall under the vignette requirement. In general, however, vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight need a vignette, while vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight must pay a distance-based toll. However, there are also exceptions.
Motorcycles
As a motorcyclist, you neither need a vignette nor do you have to pay a distance-based toll. You can use all motorways and expressways in the Czech Republic without any concerns.
Cars
If you are travelling to the Czech Republic with your car, you need a vignette. The distance-based toll does not apply to you.
Combinations: cars with trailers
There is no difference whether you travel with or without a trailer. You only need a vignette for your car. However, your towing vehicle must not weigh more than 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, otherwise the vignette requirement no longer applies and you must pay a distance-based toll instead.
Motorhomes
If your motorhome has a total weight of over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, then you must pay the distance-based toll and the vignette requirement does not apply.
Commercial vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight: including trucks and motorhomes
For all vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, the distance-based toll applies. In order for the distance-based toll to be calculated and paid, you need a transponder (on-board unit), which is registered and fitted to your vehicle. If you have questions about the distance-based toll (LINK), you can browse further in our guide.
Vehicle classes within the vignette requirement
In the Czech Republic, vehicle classes are distinguished by the different fuels of the vehicles, which is why vignette prices vary:
I: Car powered by petrol or diesel
II: Car as a plug-in hybrid (CO2 max 50g/km)
III: Car powered by biogas
IV: Car powered by natural gas (does not refer to autogas, LPG)
