Do I need a vignette for Austria?
Sticker Vignette ("Pickerl") or Digital Vignette (e-vignette)?
The vignette – commonly also known as the motorway vignette or "Pickerl" – is available as a classic sticker vignette, which is affixed to the windshield and sold in stores, or as a digital vignette – also known as an e-vignette – which is purchased online and registered directly to your license plate, with no sticker required. With the Vignette Flat Rate, you exclusively book digital vignettes, which are valid after registration confirmation. The sticker vignette will be available for the last time in 2026; from 2027 onwards, only the digital vignette will be available.
Which Vehicles Need a Vignette?
The vignette requirement depends on the technically permissible maximum mass (tzGm) of the vehicle:
| Vehicle | Sticker | Route toll/special toll |
|---|---|---|
| Motorcycle | Sticker Mandatory |
Route toll/ |
| Car / Motorhome (up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight) | Sticker Mandatory |
Route toll/ |
| Trailer / Combination | Sticker Mandatory |
Route toll/ |
| HGV (over 3.5 t GVW) | Sticker No obligation |
Route toll/ |
Trucks over 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight do not need a vignette; instead, they pay a separate, distance-based toll (truck toll). On special toll routes such as the Brenner or Karawanken tunnel, the special toll also applies to them in addition and is charged automatically via the GO-Box. There is a dedicated motorcycle vignette for motorcycles, while cars and motorhomes use the classic car vignette. For combinations (car with trailer), a second vignette for the trailer may be required depending on the total weight.

When is the digital vignette valid and is it checked?
The digital vignette is valid as soon as the registration confirmation is available – usually within a short time after purchase. Whether a valid vignette is currently registered for a license plate can be checked at any time using a free validity check.
What does the vignette cost and what happens without one?
The cost of the digital Austria vignette depends on the duration and vehicle category. Anyone travelling on toll roads without a valid vignette risks additional costs in the form of a substitute toll of 200 euros. If this is not paid, administrative penalty proceedings with fines of 300 to 3,000 euros may follow.
