Why do you have to pay toll fees?

Most countries in Europe charge toll fees. There is a so-called toll obligation. But what does that mean? Toll amounts are charged for the use of certain routes, tunnels, and bridges. The money raised through tolls is invested in the road network, allowing you to enjoy a smooth journey. The primary areas of investment are infrastructure, traffic management and road safety, as well as environmental protection measures.

• Infrastructure: construction and maintenance of roads and motorways

• Road safety and traffic management: new technologies such as intelligent traffic systems or toll gantries

• Environmental protection: expansion of noise barriers or measures to reduce emissions

How is the toll collected?

The toll can be collected in various forms. These include the vignette requirement, the distance-based toll, and special toll routes.

Vignette requirement: cars (with trailer) up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight & motorhomes

The vignette requirement means toll fees are charged not based on kilometres, but as a flat rate that varies depending on the duration of travel. With the vignette flat rate, you get your vignette for Hungary and can use it to travel on all toll roads. The vignette requirement applies in Hungary to cars (with trailer) up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight as well as to motorhomes regardless of weight, whereby motorhomes over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight fall under vehicle class D2. The vignette in Hungary is called the E-Matrica, and you can purchase the digital vignette for Hungary from us before your trip.

Depending on the vehicle class, your vehicle will be tolled at a different rate. For example, cars with more than 7 seats are tolled at a higher rate than cars with fewer than 7 seats. You can find more information on the various vehicle classes in our guide.

Distance-based toll: trucks and cars with trailer over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight

The distance-based toll applies in Hungary to vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight. Unlike the vignette requirement, the distance-based toll is not a flat rate, but instead varies depending on the road category, distance travelled (number of kilometres), vehicle category (weight class and number of axles), and CO2 emission class. As a result, the amount of the toll fee can vary greatly. The distance-based toll is collected using a transponder (transmitting device).

Vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight can pay the distance-based toll in various ways.

• Purchase of a single-route ticket: Only possible online and only valid for 120 minutes from the time of purchase. This option is recommended if you only use the roads occasionally.

• HU-GO system with transmitting device: For this option, you must register with the HU-GO system and top up a credit balance using a transmitting device (OBU). The HU-GO system is particularly suitable for frequent drivers, i.e. people who use the routes more often.

Special toll: Does not exist in Hungary!
