Tolls in Hungary
Why do you have to pay toll charges?
Most countries in Europe charge toll fees. There is a so-called toll obligation. But what does that mean? Toll charges are levied for the use of certain roads, tunnels, and bridges. The revenue generated from tolls is invested in the road network, ensuring a smooth and safe journey. The primary areas of investment are infrastructure, traffic management and road safety, as well as environmental protection measures.
- Infrastructure: Construction and maintenance of roads and motorways
- Road safety and traffic management: New technologies such as intelligent traffic systems or toll gantries
- Environmental protection: Expansion of noise barriers or measures to reduce emissions
How is the toll charged?
Tolls can be charged in different ways. These include the vignette requirement, distance-based tolls, and special toll roads.
Vignette requirement: Cars (with trailer) & motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW
Under the vignette system, toll charges are not calculated per kilometre but are based on a flat fee that varies depending on the duration of travel. Accordingly, you purchase a digital vignette before your trip and choose between different validity periods. Depending on the vehicle class, the price of the vignette may vary. By purchasing the vignette, you make a one-time payment that allows you to use all toll roads. In Hungary, the vignette requirement applies to vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW. Depending on the vehicle class, your vehicle will be charged different toll rates. For example, cars with more than 7 seats are charged higher tolls than cars with fewer than 7 seats. Further information on the different vehicle classes can be found in our guide.
Distance-based toll: Trucks, cars with trailers, and motorhomes over 3.5 t GVW
In Hungary, distance-based tolls apply to vehicles over 3.5 t GVW. Unlike the vignette system, distance-based tolls are not a flat fee but vary depending on the road category, route length (number of kilometres), vehicle category (weight class and number of axles), and CO₂ emission class. As a result, toll costs can vary significantly. Distance-based tolls are collected using a transponder (on-board unit).
Vehicles over 3.5 t GVW can pay distance-based tolls using different methods.
- Purchase of a single route ticket: Available online only and valid for 120 minutes from the time of purchase. This option is recommended if you only use the roads occasionally.
- Camper toll box: For motorhomes over 3.5 t GVW.
- HU-GO system with on-board unit: To use this option, you must register in the HU-GO system and deposit credit using an on-board unit (OBU). The HU-GO system is particularly suitable for frequent drivers who use toll roads regularly.
Special tolls: Do not exist in Hungary!
