How is the toll collected in Hungary?
The toll in Hungary is collected through two systems: through the vignette requirement (e-matrica) for cars, motorhomes, motorcycles and vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW and through the HU-GO distance-based toll for trucks and buses over 3.5 t GVW. There is no special toll for individual bridges or tunnels in Hungary.
Since 1 January 2026, all motorhomes have been subject to the vignette requirement regardless of their weight; the HU-GO is no longer possible for them. The following table shows which Hungarian toll applies to your vehicle.

A trailer behind a car (D1) does not need its own vignette. Behind a vehicle in category D2, you also need the U vignette for the trailer. There is no special toll in Hungary; the column is only for comparison with other countries.
Which roads are subject to tolls in Hungary?
The vignette is valid on the motorways and expressways included in the operator's official list: on the M0 around Budapest, on the M1, M3, M5, M6 and M7 motorways and on other expressways up to the M86. Since 1 January 2026, the M6 up to the border at Ivándárda has also been subject to the vignette requirement. Cars do not need a vignette for roads not on this list.
Toll-free roads include the M8 and the M80 as well as individual sections such as the M4 between Vecsés and the airport, the south-western bypass of Pécs (M60) and the Kaposvár bypass (M9). There is no Budapest-only vignette: you can use the Budapest toll network with the vignette for Pest County or with any nationwide vignette (1 day, 10 days, 1 month or annual).

Who needs a digital vignette in Hungary?
In Hungary, cars up to 3.5 t GVW with a maximum of seven persons, motorcycles, vans and vehicles for eight or more persons up to 3.5 t GVW and, since 1 January 2026, all motorhomes, including those over 3.5 t, need a vignette (e-matrica). Under the vignette requirement, toll charges are not calculated according to the kilometers driven but as a flat fee that varies depending on the validity period. The vignette is an electronic record linked to the license plate; there is no sticker.
With the Vignette Flat Rate, you receive your digital vignette for Hungary and can use all roads subject to the vignette requirement. Officially, the e-matrica is available for 1 day, 10 days, 1 month and as an annual vignette, plus the cheaper county vignettes for individual regions. There is no 6-month vignette.
Which vignette category applies to my vehicle?
Hungary has four categories: D1 for cars up to 3.5 t GVW with a maximum of seven persons including the driver, D1M for motorcycles, D2 for all other vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW, for example vans or vehicles for eight or more persons, and U for trailers behind a D2 vehicle. Motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW with a maximum of seven persons need category D1, heavier or larger motorhomes need category D2. A trailer or caravan behind a car (D1) is covered by the car's vignette; behind a D2 vehicle, you also need a U vignette. Find out more in the guide Motorhome in Hungary.
Which vehicles are exempt from the vignette?
Exempt vehicles include those of the military, police and civil protection, Hungarian emergency vehicles with special signals, humanitarian transports and diplomatic vehicles (subject to reciprocity), as well as vehicles of the road authorities of neighbouring countries up to the first exit. The exemption only applies to vehicles that have been registered in advance with the competent Hungarian authority and must be renewed annually. Electric vehicles are not exempt and also need a vignette.
Where do I buy the vignette and how long is it valid?
The vignette is available online, via app and at petrol stations and points of sale at the border. When buying, you enter the license plate, the country code and the vehicle category, without accents and without spaces. The vignette is linked to these details; checks are carried out electronically via the license plate or by stopping vehicles. Keep the control slip or the confirmation for three years, as you will need it for any later corrections. Beware of unofficial sellers charging a mark-up: How to recognize dubious offers.
The daily vignette is valid on the selected calendar day, the 10-day vignette on the start day plus the nine following days and the monthly vignette until the same day of the following month, i.e. not until the end of the month. The annual vignette is valid for one calendar year plus January of the following year, so the 2026 annual vignette is valid until 31 January 2027. Without a preferred date, validity begins with payment; with a preferred date, you can book in advance.
Good to know: according to the operator, anyone who has driven onto the toll road without a vignette can still buy one within 60 minutes of entering it. If you have mistyped the license plate, the vignette can be corrected if no more than three characters are affected. This costs 1,470 HUF (approx. 4.01 €); for mixed-up characters such as 0 and O or 1 and I, it is free of charge. After a payment request, the correction must be made within 60 days.
What happens without a vignette in Hungary?
Anyone who drives on a toll road without a valid vignette must pay a replacement toll (surcharge). For all vehicles subject to the vignette requirement, it has been 27,790 HUF (approx. 75.88 €) since 1 January 2026 if you pay within 60 days, and 95,730 HUF (approx. 261.38 €) thereafter. The deadline runs from the payment request or, in the case of an on-the-spot check, from the day of the check.
A vignette of the wrong, too low category costs a difference surcharge of 15,530 HUF (approx. 42.40 €) within 60 days, and 49,190 HUF (approx. 134.31 €) thereafter. A maximum of one surcharge is charged per license plate and calendar day. For vehicles from EU countries, Hungary queries the vehicle register of the country of registration; otherwise the operator works with foreign debt collection partners, whose costs are added.
In the case of several payment requests, the surcharge can, on application within 75 days of the first request, be limited to a maximum of two basic surcharges. In addition, surcharges already incurred can be withdrawn on application if you buy a nationwide annual vignette for the vehicle within 75 days of the payment request. How much is the toll for cars in Hungary in 2026?
The 2026 vignette prices have applied since 1 January 2026 and are set in forints in Hungary; there is no official euro price. The table shows the prices for categories D1 (cars and motorhomes up to 3.5 t), D1M (motorcycle), D2 (vans and larger vehicles) and U (trailer behind a D2 vehicle), including VAT. The Hungary toll for a car is 6,900 HUF (approx. 18.84 €) with the 10-day vignette and 61,760 HUF (approx. 168.63 €) with the annual vignette.
If you only travel within one region, the county vignette is cheaper: it is an annual vignette for one county and costs 7,190 HUF (approx. 19.63 €) for a car. New since 2026 is the M1 regional vignette for the counties of Pest, Fejér, Komárom-Esztergom and Győr-Moson-Sopron at 15,000 HUF (approx. 40.96 €).

Is there a distance-based toll in Hungary?
Yes, for trucks and buses over 3.5 t GVW (truck toll in Hungary). They pay the HU-GO distance-based toll. Unlike the vignette, this is not a flat fee: the charge is made up of an infrastructure charge and a charge for external costs (air pollution, noise and CO2) and depends on the kilometers driven, the road category, the number of axles and the emission class. There is no distance-based toll for cars and motorhomes in Hungary.
Payment is made with an on-board unit (OBU) via a HU-GO account, either in advance with credit or afterwards. Without registration, you can buy a route ticket online before setting off; since 1 May 2026 it has been valid for 300 minutes from purchase and cannot be cancelled. Motorways, expressways and the main roads listed by the operator are subject to tolls. When a trailer is coupled or uncoupled, the number of axles changes, and the vehicle class must then be adjusted before the journey.

Anyone who has not paid before setting off must expect a fine from the competent authority. It is graduated according to the time since the offence: in the first 120 minutes, it is 61,000 HUF (approx. 166.55 €) for a two-axle vehicle and 91,000 HUF (approx. 248.46 €) for five or more axles; from 241 minutes, it rises to 218,000 and 281,000 HUF respectively. Declaring a vehicle class that is too low is also penalized.

Is there a special toll in Hungary?
No. In Hungary, there is no special toll for individual bridges or tunnels. The operator only has the two systems e-matrica (vignette) and HU-GO (distance-based toll); the M0 around Budapest is also covered by the vignette.
Not a toll, but good to know for trucks: in Budapest, a paid entry permit applies in several zones. This is an access permit issued by the city and not a toll.

Which vignette do I need for Budapest and the M0?
There is no Budapest-only vignette. The M0 around Budapest is located in Pest County and is part of the network subject to the vignette requirement. With the vignette for Pest County or any nationwide vignette (1 day, 10 days, 1 month or annual), you can also use the Budapest toll network.
