Penalties and Consequences Bulgaria

In Bulgaria, a vignette requirement applies. This means that tolls are collected through a vignette to cover costs such as maintaining the road network. As a traveler, it is necessary to purchase a vignette (motorcycles and vehicles with a gross weight over 3.5 t are exempt) in order to use all routes of the Bulgarian road network without concern.

In addition to the vignette requirement, Bulgaria also has a distance-based toll. This applies to vehicles with a total weight of over 3.5 t GVW (excluding motorhomes). Before your trip, find out which vehicle class your vehicle belongs to, so you know whether you need a vignette or must pay the toll via a distance-based system.

Penalty for Missing Vignette

Anyone who uses national roads or motorways in Bulgaria without a valid (digital) vignette must pay a fine of 300 BGN (approximately €160). If you purchase a vignette on the same day, a compensatory payment of 70 BGN (approximately €36) may be possible. Costs you definitely want to avoid!

Planning a trip to Bulgaria but forgot to purchase a vignette? Then simply get one from usquickly, digitally, and from the comfort of your home, registered directly to your vehicle. Because: without a vignette, you risk fines.

Special Case: Danube Crossings

Regardless of the vignette or distance-based toll, Danube crossings between Romania and Bulgaria are subject to additional toll charges. These crossings are considered special toll sections, meaning every vehicle owner must pay a fee to use them. Therefore, please note that using certain routes such as Danube crossings involves additional charges, and a vignette does not grant free passage across the Danube.
