Vehicle classes in Austria

If you are traveling to Austria, you must observe the applicable toll regulations in Austria. Basically: Vehicles up to 3.5 t max. gross weight are subject to the vignette requirement, while vehicles over 3.5 t max. gross weight must pay a distance-based toll. The amount of the distance-based toll depends, among other things, on the length of the route driven. To record this mileage, a GO-Box must be purchased. Regardless of the vignette requirement and the distance-based toll, there is also the route toll for special toll routes in Austria.

Do you need a vignette?

All vehicles up to 3.5 t max. gross weight require a vignette. Vehicles over 3.5 t max. gross weight must pay a distance-based toll. The regulations for the various vehicle types are listed below.

Motorcycles

Motorcycles are subject to the vignette requirement in Austria.

Cars

As a car driver, you need a vignette for your vehicle and are not required to pay a distance-based toll. This applies as long as your car does not weigh more than 3.5 t max. gross weight. If your vehicle exceeds this weight, the vignette requirement no longer applies. In this case, a GO-Box is required, which is used to collect the distance-based toll. The GO-Box must also remain activated on toll-free roads.

Combinations (towing vehicle + trailer)

Trailers are not subject to the vignette requirement in Austria. What matters is the weight of the towing vehicle, for example a car. As a car driver, you need a vignette as long as the towing vehicle does not weigh more than 3.5 t max. gross weight. If the weight is higher, the vignette requirement no longer applies, and you must use a GO-Box for the distance-based toll. This also remains activated on toll-free roads.

Motorhomes

The same regulations apply to motorhomes as to other vehicles. Motorhomes up to 3.5 t max. gross weight are subject to the vignette requirement. For a weight of more than 3.5 t max. gross weight, this requirement no longer applies, and the distance-based toll must be paid using a GO-Box. The GO-Box must also remain active on non-toll roads. Transitional period: Vehicles with more than 3.5 t max. gross weight, for which a maximum permissible total weight of no more than 3.5 t was set before December 1, 2023, will continue to be subject to the vignette requirement or route toll until January 31, 2029, and do not need a GO-Box until then. This rule applies not only to motorhomes but to all vehicles. For motorhomes, this applies, for example, to vehicles that have been downrated to 3.5 t. If this designation is later revoked, for example by lifting a downrating, the distance-based toll with a GO-Box will apply from that point onward.

Trucks

For trucks, the following applies: As long as the max. gross weight (field F.1) does not exceed 3.5 t, a vignette is required and no distance-based toll applies. For a weight of more than 3.5 t max. gross weight, the vignette requirement no longer applies, and you must use a GO-Box to collect the distance-based toll. This also remains activated on non-toll routes.

• Car: includes cars as well as motorhomes and trucks with a permissible total mass of up to and including 3.5 t max. gross weight
