Vehicle Classes

When traveling to Austria, you must comply with the applicable toll regulations in Austria. As a general rule: vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight are subject to the vignette requirement, while vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight must pay a distance-based toll. The amount of the distance-based toll depends, among other things, on the length of the route driven. To record this mileage, a GO-Box must be purchased. In addition to the vignette requirement and the distance-based toll, Austria also has a route toll for special toll routes.

Do you need a vignette?

All vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight require a vignette. Vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight must pay a distance-based toll. The regulations for the various vehicle types are listed below.

Motorcycles

Motorcycles are subject to the vignette requirement in Austria.

Cars

As a car driver, you need a vignette for your vehicle and are not required to pay a distance-based toll. This applies as long as your car does not weigh more than 3.5 t gross vehicle weight. If your vehicle exceeds this weight, the vignette requirement no longer applies. In this case, a GO-Box is required, which is used to collect the distance-based toll. The GO-Box must remain activated even on toll-free roads.

Combinations (towing vehicle + trailer)

Trailers are not subject to the vignette requirement in Austria. What matters is the weight of the towing vehicle, for example a car. As a car driver, you need a vignette as long as the towing vehicle does not weigh more than 3.5 t gross vehicle weight. If the weight is higher, the vignette requirement no longer applies, and you must use a GO-Box for the distance-based toll. This also remains activated on toll-free roads.

Motorhomes

The same regulations apply to motorhomes as to other vehicles. Motorhomes up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight are subject to the vignette requirement. If the weight exceeds 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, this requirement no longer applies, and the distance-based toll must be paid using a GO-Box. The GO-Box must remain active even on non-toll roads.

Trucks

For trucks, the following applies: as long as the total weight, including load, is no more than 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, a vignette is required and no distance-based toll applies. If the weight exceeds 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, the vignette requirement no longer applies, and you must use a GO-Box to collect the distance-based toll. This also remains activated on non-toll routes.
