Ski Resorts in Slovakia
Even though Slovakia is not necessarily known for its ski resorts, there are still several areas in the country that are suitable for skiing and snowboarding. In this article, you will learn more about the diverse ski regions of the Low Tatras, Malá Fatra and the High Tatras.
Low Tatras

Jasná Ski Resort
The largest ski resort in Slovakia is located at an altitude of 943 m in the valley up to 2004 m at the summit. The varied slopes extend over a total length of 52 km and offer plenty of practice and fun for every level. The ski season starts at the end of November and runs until April. Depending on snow conditions, the season can even extend into May. The nearest larger city is about 20 minutes away from the resort by car.
In Jasná, there are easy, intermediate and difficult slopes, so both beginners and professionals can find their place in this winter paradise. In total, there are 19 lifts in the area that can take you to your favorite slopes. This means more than 30,000 people can be transported per hour. The resort is not only known for its countless slopes, but also for the wide range of adrenaline-filled activities. Discover the freeride zones, so-called off-piste areas that are part of the deep snow, or visit the snowpark to practice spectacular jumps and try out rails of varying difficulty levels. In addition, the resort has children’s areas, which will also provide fun for the little ones among you. You can also take part in night skiing, so you can explore the beautiful snowy landscape not only during the day, but also at night. But the fun doesn’t stop there! Park Snow Donovaly
Park Snow Donovaly is located in the Slovak region of Banskobystrický Kraj, between the Low Tatras and Great Fatra national parks. This winter sports paradise opens its doors at an altitude of 914 m up to 1361 m and welcomes visitors from early December to the end of March. The exact length of the season always depends on snow conditions and may therefore vary. The resort offers slopes with a total length of 11 km, which you can reach via 23 different lifts. The nearest city is about 25 minutes away from the resort by car.
The resort is a true paradise for families who are just discovering winter sports—whether snowboarding or skiing. The slopes are mostly suitable for beginners, as they are easy to intermediate. Therefore, the slopes are divided into two areas to give both beginners and advanced riders enough space: the Záhradište area for beginners and slightly more advanced riders, and the Nová hoľa area for experienced skiers and advanced riders.
In addition to traditional ski runs, the Fun Park as a children’s zone offers plenty of fun for the little ones among you. The Fun Park is considered the second-largest children’s ski area and features nine magic carpets that safely take your children to the top of the gentle practice slope. This makes the children’s ski area suitable for kids from the age of three. Park Snow Donovaly also has the so-called Riders Park for freestylers who want to discover various obstacles. The Riders Park offers action at different difficulty levels and is particularly popular with snowboarders. In this ski resort, you can also enjoy night skiing and admire nature after dark. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, you can discover cross-country skiing in Donovaly as well. The cross-country trails cover a total distance of 18.4 km. You can also go ice skating on the ice rink, take part in snowshoe hikes, explore the toboggan run, or end the day in one of the après-ski bars.

Malá Fatra
The following ski resorts are located in northern Slovakia and lie within the Malá Fatra National Park. The national park is especially known for its unique nature, which stands out thanks to impressive mountain landscapes and guarantees a varied panoramic view.
Vrátna Ski Resort
The Vrátna Ski Resort can be considered a small to medium-sized ski area that blends wonderfully into the landscape of the national park. Enjoy challenging descents with a wonderful view of the imposing mountain world of northern Slovakia. The resort offers slopes with a total length of 15 km and is located at an altitude of 600 m to over 1500 m. Modern gondolas and chairlifts take you to your target slope. The ski season at Vrátna usually starts at the end of December and runs until the end of April.
This resort mainly impresses with challenging descents that are particularly suitable for advanced skiers and snowboarders. The slopes are described as intermediate to difficult. Therefore, this resort is generally not recommended for beginners. However, it should be emphasized that this resort is especially worthwhile for skiers who are not only advanced winter sports enthusiasts but also nature lovers. While you race down the slopes, a spectacular view of the Malá Fatra peaks is guaranteed! In addition, this place is perfect for winter hikes and snowshoe hikes.
All in all, you should only choose this ski resort if you already feel confident skiing or snowboarding and would describe yourself as an advanced winter sports enthusiast. Avoid this resort if you are just starting out and do not yet want to venture onto intermediate slopes. For freeriders and advanced riders, however, this resort is a true winter paradise!
Kubińska Hoľa
This ski resort is located at an altitude of 720 m to 1396 m and is part of the Oravská Magura mountain range. Here you will find slopes with a total length of around 14 km, offering variety for every level. You can reach these slopes via ten lifts, which can transport around 9,000 people per hour. The ski season lasts from mid-December to early April, but may vary depending on snowfall. The nearest town is only 8 km away and can also be easily reached by public transport. Kubińska Hoľa is also one of the most snow-reliable areas in the country.
The slopes range from easy to intermediate to difficult, offering something for beginners and professionals alike. A special highlight is the Turistická run, which stretches over a length of 4 km. The two so-called Super-G runs (race courses) are also recommended; each is almost 3 km long and particularly suitable for experienced skiers or snowboarders. In addition, you will find freeride zones as well as a snowpark with jumps and rails, promising plenty of action. But not only experienced snowboarders and skiers will enjoy extra fun—children will too. Discover the Kids Park with your children, a designated area featuring a magic carpet to a gentle practice slope as well as children’s entertainment.
All in all, the Kubińska Hoľa ski resort is suitable for both inexperienced skiers and professionals. Thanks in particular to the children’s area, the little ones will have fun here too. And adults will also get their money’s worth with the different runs and the snowpark!
Veľká Rača
This ski resort is located near the borders with the Czech Republic and Poland. Overall, this snowy paradise offers around 14 km of slopes and lies at an altitude of 650 m up to 1048 m at the summit of the resort. You can access the runs via various lifts that can transport up to 9,700 people per hour. The ski season starts in early December and runs until the end of March. Depending on snowfall, the season can last longer. The nearest town is about 15 km away and can also be reached by public transport.
The slopes range from easy to intermediate to difficult, offering something for every skiing or snowboarding level. The longest run stretches over 2.9 km. In this ski resort, you can also enjoy night skiing—and even on two slopes! Besides night skiing, another highlight is the snowpark with halfpipes for an extra dose of adrenaline. If you are still less experienced, you can also use the ski school to gain more experience. There is also a children’s ski school for the little ones among you. In addition, this ski resort has a bobsleigh track you definitely shouldn’t miss, as it is one of the longest in Central Europe. Besides skiing or snowboarding, you can also discover cross-country skiing. The ski resort offers various cross-country trails. Don’t forget to check out the après-ski bars and round off your eventful day.
High Tatras
The High Tatras are known for their diverse ski resorts and viewpoints. Be impressed by the breathtaking mountain scenery and not only pursue your passion for skiing or snowboarding, but also discover cross-country skiing or ski mountaineering. In addition, you will find various wellness hotels there that will make your winter adventure even more enjoyable.
Tatranská Lomnica
This ski resort is considered the highest-altitude ski region in the country and is located between 888 m and 2196 m. This allows you to enjoy a spectacular elevation difference of around 1,300 m while tackling the varied runs. In total, the slopes extend over around 12 km and can be reached via modern chairlifts and gondolas. The ski season runs from late November to late April. However, this season may vary depending on snow conditions. The nearest town is about 25 minutes away by car and also has an international airport.
The slopes are suitable for every level. Discover easy, intermediate and difficult runs that will inspire you. The resort is also considered particularly child-friendly thanks to the children’s area called Maxiland and the ski kindergarten, which is ideal for the little ones among you. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, you can discover cross-country skiing on around 24 km. The toboggan run and snow tubing are also interesting. For some fun away from the winter cold, the indoor fun park called Kamzíkovo is also a great option. Moreover, this ski resort is perfect for nature lovers. You can hike up to the summit of Lomnický štít (2,632 m), which is known as the second-highest mountain in the region. Even though there is no ski run there, you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view. All in all, every skier or snowboarder will be happy in this resort and can find the right slopes. Thanks to the various options for children, this ski resort is also particularly suitable for families.
Štrbské Pleso
This ski resort lies at an altitude between 1380 m and 1824 m and is located on the southern slopes of the Predné Solisko mountain. The slopes cover a total length of almost 9 km and are especially suitable for beginners and intermediate skiers or snowboarders. You can reach these slopes via eight different lifts. The ski season is open from early December to mid-April. The nearest town is almost 30 km away.
The slopes are both easy and intermediate. In peak season, you can sometimes ski not only during the day but also after dark. Night skiing is therefore definitely possible in this resort. In addition to the classic slopes, you can discover the snowpark or try cross-country skiing. The cross-country trails cover more than 20 km in total. That is why this ski resort is known above all as the cross-country skiing center of Slovakia. There is also the option of snow rafting and night sledding. If you are interested in the diverse nature of the High Tatras, you should go on a winter hike or take a snowshoe hike. All in all, this ski resort is especially suitable for cross-country skiing enthusiasts as well as beginners and intermediate skiers.
