Toll Vignette-Required Routes
In Slovakia there are numerous toll-vignette-required routes. In order to use these, you must therefore purchase a vignette in advance. If you use toll-vignette-required roads without a vignette, fines may be imposed. Therefore avoid this risk and pay attention to the toll-vignette-required roads.
Digital Vignette
On the signposted motorway and expressway sections of Slovakia a vignette requirement applies. Sections without fees are marked with signs showing ›BEZ ÚHRADY‹. Since 1 August 2024, the motorway bypasses of Bratislava, Nitra, Košice, Prešov, Poprad, Žilina and Banská Bystrica have been toll-free, among others, and since 21 June 2026 the entire D4 outer bypass of Bratislava has also been toll-free, and since 5 October 2026 the new D1 bypass of Ružomberok (Hubová–Ivachnová) as well. The digital vignette (also called e-vignette) for Slovak motorways and expressways replaces the original sticker vignette and has already existed since 2016.
Not every vehicle falls under the vignette requirement. In addition to the vignette requirement, there is also the route-based toll in Slovakia. Further information on the various vehicle classes and when your vehicle is subject to a vignette requirement or the route-based toll can be found in our article on Vehicle Classes and on Toll in Slovakia.

Important information on toll-vignette-required routes
Is it practically possible to completely avoid the toll-vignette-required routes in Slovakia?
For longer stretches, hardly, since the main routes D1, D2 and R1 require a vignette between cities. However, since 1 August 2024, the motorway bypasses of Bratislava, Nitra, Žilina, Poprad, Prešov, Košice and Banská Bystrica are toll-free (signposted with "BEZ ÚHRADY"). Anyone who only uses these sections does not need a vignette.
