Driving on motorways and expressways in Austria has come at a cost for many years. Motorists are required to purchase a valid vignette in order to be allowed to use these important traffic routes. This regulation applies regardless of the newly introduced Fernpass toll and represents an established practice that makes a significant contribution to the maintenance and safety of the Austrian road network.
From the year 2028, a significant change will come into effect for motorists: the introduction of the Fernpass toll in the Reutte district (Tyrol). This measure, which is particularly relevant for travellers from the Allgäu region, brings with it a number of changes, about which we would like to inform you comprehensively below.
The new regulation stipulates that motorists will have to pay a fee of 14 euros for the stretch between Lermoos and Nassereith. This decision was announced by Tyrol's Governor Anton Mattle (ÖVP) and his deputy Georg Dornauer (SPÖ) at a press conference in Reutte. The revenue from the toll is intended to finance a tunnel project that should significantly improve traffic flow on this important transit route. The estimated cost of the tunnel project amounts to 160 million euros, and it is expected that this measure will reduce travel time by about three minutes.
Contrary to earlier considerations, no exemption from the toll for local drivers is planned. The reason for this lies in the new road cost directives of the European Union. As compensation, the introduction of a multi-trip ticket for frequent drivers is planned.
For the implementation of the Fernpass toll, two toll stations in Nassereith and Blindsee are planned. The toll is also intended to be payable electronically. In addition, the introduction of a day ticket for drivers who wish to travel the Fernpass in both directions on the same day is currently being discussed. Travellers and holidaymakers who use the Lermoos–Nassereith route on their way to Lake Garda or for excursions in the region are particularly affected by the toll regulation.
