Vignette requirement in the Czech Republic
To cover maintenance costs, a vignette requirement applies in the Czech Republic on the motorways (D-roads) listed in the official route list. Since January 2021, the vignette has been available exclusively in digital form – sticker vignettes have no longer been issued since then. The digital vignette must be purchased and registered to the vehicle's license plate, regardless of whether it is a short transit or a longer journey.
Digital vignette (e-vignette) instead of sticker vignette
The former sticker vignette was affixed to the windshield and sold in shops. The digital vignette – also called an e-vignette – is instead purchased online and registered directly to your license plate – with no sticker required. With the vignette flat rate, you exclusively book digital vignettes, which are valid after registration confirmation, usually within a few minutes.
Which vehicles require a vignette – and which are exempt?
The vignette requirement applies to vehicles with at least four wheels and a permissible gross weight of up to 3.5 tonnes, such as cars and motorhomes. Exempt from the vignette requirement, on the other hand, are:
- Motorcycles and trikes are exempt from the vignette requirement.
- Trailers are exempt from the vignette requirement.
- Pure electric and hydrogen vehicles are exempt from the vignette requirement. If the vehicle is registered outside the Czech Republic, this only applies if you report the vehicle as exempt online with the Czech toll authority before the first journey – otherwise fines of up to 5,000 CZK may apply. Plug-in hybrids with no more than 50 g CO₂/km pay a reduced price but are not exempt.
Trucks and heavy vehicles (over 3.5 tons)
Vehicles with a permissible total weight of more than 3.5 tonnes do not need a vignette, but instead pay the electronic, satellite-based toll MYTO CZ with an on-board unit. This separate system is not part of the vignette flat rate offered here.
Fines for missing vignette
Anyone driving on toll-sticker-required motorways (D-roads) in the Czech Republic without a valid vignette risks an on-the-spot fine (bloková pokuta) of up to 5,000 Czech korunas (approx. €205) if checked. In the official administrative proceedings (správní řízení), the fine can rise to up to 20,000 Czech korunas (approx. €820). The exact amount may vary depending on the individual case. Checks are carried out by the police and customs administration based on the license plate – using camera vehicles, fixed control gates, and inspections at rest stops and parking areas.
