Vehicle Classes in Slovenia
If you want to travel to Slovenia, you either need a vignette or must pay a distance-based toll to settle the applicable toll fees. Below you will find an overview of whether your vehicle requires a vignette or whether you need to purchase a transmitter device for the distance-based toll at the toll stations on site.
Do you need a digital vignette?
In principle, vehicles up to 3.5 t gross weight are subject to the vignette requirement, while vehicles over 3.5 t gross weight must pay a distance-based toll. Depending on the type of vehicle, however, exceptions may apply.
Motorcycles
A digital vignette is required for motorcycles to use the Slovenian road network.
Cars
A digital vignette is also required for cars to use the Slovenian road network. Vehicles with a front axle height of more than 1.3 m are subject to a higher toll category.
Combinations: car and trailer
If the permissible total weight of the car-and-trailer combination is a maximum of 3.5 t gross weight, only a digital vignette for the car is required. However, if the total weight exceeds 3.5 t gross weight, the vignette requirement no longer applies and a distance-based toll must be paid instead.
Motorhomes
Motorhomes up to 3.5 t gross weight are subject to the vignette requirement. Motorhomes with a permissible total weight over 3.5 t gross weight, on the other hand, must pay a distance-based toll; a vignette is not required in this case.
Commercial vehicles over 3.5 t gross weight
For vehicles with a permissible total weight over 3.5 t gross weight, there is generally an obligation to pay a distance-based toll. A vignette is not provided for this vehicle class.
Vehicle classes within the vignette requirement
Within the vignette requirement, vehicles are assigned to different classes. Depending on the respective vehicle class, the costs for the digital vignette also differ.
Class 1: Motorcycles
Class 2a: Motor vehicles up to 3.5 t gross weight with a front axle height of less than 1.3 m as well as motorhomes up to 3.5 t gross weight with an SA entry in Part I of the registration certificate and fixed living installations
Class 2b: Motor vehicles under 3.5 t gross weight with a front axle height of more than 1.3 m
Attention: special toll route
The Karawanks Tunnel is a special toll route. Additional fees apply for using this tunnel, regardless of whether a digital vignette has been purchased or a distance-based toll has been paid. The tunnel connects Austria with Slovenia and is frequently used to cross the border. Although the Karawanks Tunnel itself is not subject to the vignette requirement, the access roads run over sections that do require a vignette. Travelers coming from Austria who wish to use the Karawanks Tunnel should therefore take into account both the additional tunnel fees and purchase a digital vignette for the access routes.
