Romania is a popular travel destination. Although the infrastructure is continuously being improved and modernized, the road network still presents some challenges. A bit of preparation is therefore helpful to ensure a smooth trip. That’s why in this article you’ll find everything you need to know about charging and refueling in Romania.
Refueling in Romania is generally very well organized. You’ll find a dense network of petrol stations, especially along major routes, in cities, and on motorways. In rural areas, stations are usually open until around 9 pm.
The network for charging electric cars is also being steadily expanded. In urban areas and along key transport corridors, there are already some charging options. In rural regions, however, charging points are still scarce, which is why good route planning is recommended.
At the moment, you should not travel to Romania with hydrogen vehicles, as there are no hydrogen refueling stations available.
Refueling in Romania is easy and well organized. Common petrol station chains include Lukoil, Shell, BP, Petrom, ÖMV, Rompetrol and MOL. Many stations offer additional services such as car washes, small shops, or an attendant.

Petrol stations and charging stations offer various payment options. As a rule, you can pay in cash or by credit card, and sometimes via Apple Pay or Google Wallet. For rural areas, it’s recommended to always carry some cash (RON).
Romania is increasingly investing in the expansion of its charging infrastructure. The goal is to reduce the maximum distance between charging points to around 60 km. At present, coverage is still not nationwide.
Key investors include Kaufland, E.ON, Lidl and Eldrive. Further projects are already planned.
Especially in rural areas and along motorways, charging stations are still not sufficiently available. In cities the situation is much better—still, you should check your route in advance.
