The border crossings between the Czech Republic and Germany form key connection points between two countries where cross-border traffic takes place. As a result, they are of particular importance for international trade as well as tourism.

The Border Between the Czech Republic and Germany

The border between Germany and the Czech Republic stretches for around 810 kilometers and connects both countries in the heart of Europe. Although both states are members of the European Union and part of the Schengen Area, certain checks may still take place at the border crossings, particularly in relation to the transport of goods.

Germany and the Czech Republic not only share a geographical border, but also a remarkable variety of natural landscapes and cultural sights. This close connection is facilitated by numerous border crossings that not only enable travel between the two countries, but also provide access to impressive landscapes and regional highlights. Below, you will find an overview of some recommended border crossings that not only serve as transport links, but also stand out because of their proximity to attractive natural and cultural areas.

Well-Known Border Crossings Between the Czech Republic and Germany

The most important border crossings include, among others:

  • Furth im Wald / Železná Ruda: This border crossing connects the Bavarian town of Furth im Wald on the German side with Železná Ruda on the Czech side. It is located in the middle of the Bavarian Forest and offers convenient access to Czech cities such as Pilsen and Prague. The surrounding region is rich in hiking trails and scenic beauty.
  • Bayerisch Eisenstein / Železná Ruda-Alžbětín: This is another important border crossing in the Bavarian Forest, leading to Železná Ruda-Alžbětín on the Czech side. At this crossing, travelers can also use the historic railway line connecting Germany and the Czech Republic. In winter, the region offers good opportunities for winter sports, while in summer it is ideal for hiking.
  • Waidhaus - Rozvadov: This border crossing is located near Waidhaus on the German side and Rozvadov on the Czech side and is one of the busiest crossings between the two countries. Not far away is the well-known King's Casino in Rozvadov, which attracts visitors from many parts of Europe.

These recommended border crossings between Germany and the Czech Republic not only make travel straightforward, but also open up the opportunity to discover the scenic beauty and cultural diversity of both countries. They are therefore far more than simple connections between two states. Rather, they provide access to different regions, cultures, and natural experiences. Whether you are traveling for business or would like to explore the sights of this area, these border crossings offer the opportunity to combine two countries in a single journey.

Germany

The following section provides you with an overview of whether you need a vignette and whether certain toll sections need to be taken into account.

Germany: Vignette Requirement

There is no general vignette requirement for motorways in Germany. This means that most motorways can be used free of charge. However, there are some exceptions, such as certain motorway tunnels and bridges for which fees are charged. These fees serve to finance and maintain the respective infrastructure and are usually payable at toll stations or via electronic payment systems.

Distance-Based Toll

No distance-based toll is charged for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight. For trucks, however, tolls apply on federal motorways, including service and rest areas, as well as on federal roads. Truck tolls can, for example, be paid using an on-board unit (OBU).

Czech Republic

The following section provides you with an overview of whether you need a vignette in the Czech Republic or whether you must pay a distance-based toll.

Czech Republic: Vignette Requirement

In the Czech Republic, you need a digital vignette to use motorways and expressways. This vignette requirement applies to all vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight. The vignette is an efficient system for financing and maintaining the Czech motorway network. You can purchase the vignette at most petrol stations in the Czech Republic as well as at selected sales points in Germany, particularly near the border. In addition, you have the option to conveniently purchase the vignette from us online before starting your journey.

The Czech vignette is available in different validity periods, including 10 days, 1 month, and 1 year. Which period is most suitable for you depends on your individual travel plans. For a short stay, for example, the 10-day vignette may be an appropriate choice, while the annual vignette is more suitable for longer stays or regular trips to the Czech Republic.

Distance-Based Toll

Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight must pay tolls on motorways, expressways, and designated sections of so-called first-class roads. These routes are marked with an “M” on a yellow background. The toll is collected via a satellite-based transmission device, the so-called OBU 5051 on-board unit.

Please note that your vehicle must be registered in the electronic toll system and the required deposit must be paid before using a toll road. In addition, it must be ensured that the transmission device is properly installed in the vehicle. If you do not yet have such a device, you can purchase one at a Mytocz sales point. There you can obtain the MYTO CZ OBU, the Czech on-board unit used for automatic toll billing. Electronic identification is required for registration. These electronic toll systems are a convenient and straightforward solution, especially for frequent drivers and foreign vehicles that regularly travel through the Czech Republic.

The amount of the toll depends on various factors, in particular the road category, the route length, the vehicle category including weight class and number of axles, the CO2 emission class, and the time of day. Higher prices may apply between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles over 4.25 tonnes, which were previously exempt from tolls, have also been classified as subject to tolls since March 2024. Payment can be made either in advance or afterwards.
