Video Toll Austria

What is the Video Toll in Austria?

Video toll is the older term for the digital route toll in Austria.

The name "Video Toll" originated because certain Austrian highway sections require an additional route toll, which is not covered by the general 10-day vignette, 2-month vignette, or annual vignette in Austria. When entering these toll sections of the highway, there is a dedicated lane where installed video cameras automatically check the license plate to verify if the necessary route toll has been paid.

Due to the automatic license plate check via video cameras, waiting times in the video lane are significantly shorter than in the other lanes, where vehicles must stop and pay the route toll at the toll booth in cash or by debit card.

Older Term / Synonym

The Video Toll is simply an older term for the digital route toll. You can conveniently register the digital route toll online here, and just a few minutes after registration, you can use the green-marked lanes specifically for the digital route toll without additional waiting times. However, the normal lanes can also be used with the digital route toll, as it will be automatically recognized there as well.

Where is the Video Toll Collected?

The Video Toll, or Digital Route Toll, is collected for tunnels and highway sections where the construction and maintenance costs are particularly high in the Alps and which are also heavily used. An additional vignette is not required to drive on a road with a route toll, but generally, a vignette is still needed for the access roads.

Missing Route Toll/Vignette Can Be Expensive

At most toll stations, barriers prevent access to the toll section without a valid route toll.

At the A 9 Pyhrn / Bosruck and Gleinalm Tunnel toll stations, the barriers have been removed from the lanes for the Digital Route Toll to ensure smooth traffic flow.

The presence of the Digital Route Toll is checked electronically, and if the route toll is missing, a substitute toll request is sent based on the license plate.

The cost for the substitute toll is 120 €. If not paid, administrative penalty proceedings with possible fines ranging from 300 € to 3000 € may be initiated.

Vacation Tip:

For vacation travelers, it is advisable to register all necessary vignettes in advance.

For Austria, in addition to possible Video Toll/Route Toll products, a vignette is required for all other highway/expressway sections. Other countries besides Austria also have a vignette/toll system:

  • In Slovenia, the use of highways and expressways is subject to tolls.
  • In Switzerland, a vignette is required for the use of highways and national roads. An electronic vignette for Switzerland is currently not available. Therefore, a sticker vignette must be visibly placed on the windshield. The vignette can be purchased at the border, highway stations near the border, as well as at gas stations in Switzerland. From 01.08.2023, the vignette for Switzerland will also be available digitally.
  • In Italy, tolls are charged by highway operators to use the corresponding highways. Generally, it is possible to pay the toll at toll stations within a closed system, where access to the highway is only through toll stations. An electronic system is available for the A36, A59, and A60.
