A special toll applies to specific special toll routes. These routes typically include tunnels or mountain passes that involve particularly high construction and maintenance costs. Tunnel projects, in particular, require complex engineering solutions, specialized machinery, and advanced technologies, which result in significantly higher expenses. For this reason, a separate toll is charged for these routes.
The use of special toll routes requires payment of an additional fee. Although these routes are not covered by the vignette system or the distance-based toll, they remain subject to toll charges.
This means that regardless of whether you have already purchased a vignette or paid the distance-based toll, an extra fee must be paid when using certain tunnels or mountain passes. The special toll must therefore be paid by all vehicle owners when traveling on a designated special toll route.
Please note that most special toll routes can only be accessed via vignette-required roads or distance-based toll roads. Therefore, in practice, you will still need a valid vignette or – for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes – an electronic on-board unit for the distance-based toll system.
In Slovenia, there is one special toll route that requires an additional fee: the Karawanks Tunnel (A11), operated by ASFINAG and DARS, which connects Austria and Slovenia.
The toll amount depends on the vehicle class. Payment can be made on site in cash or by credit card. Alternatively, digital route toll tickets can be purchased in advance, for example through ADAC sales offices. With a digital route toll ticket, you may use the green-marked toll lanes and avoid payment at the toll station.
