Along the southern edge of the Karawanks, the Kamnik–Savinja Alps extend across a remarkably diverse landscape. Broad high plateaus such as the impressive Velika Planina alternate with deeply carved valleys. A dense network of marked hiking trails leads to mountain huts, clear mountain rivers, and numerous natural and cultural landmarks—always accompanied by outstanding panoramic views.
Velika Planina is a high plateau in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps at an altitude of around 1,500 meters. The area is easy to reach, either via the Kamniška Bistrica Valley or by cable car. It is particularly well known for its traditional alpine herdsmen’s settlement, one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
In addition to its cultural significance, the plateau impresses with its natural diversity, featuring expansive pastures, flower meadows, and characteristic karst formations. All year round, Velika Planina combines scenic beauty with living tradition.
The Kamniška Bistrica rises in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps and flows for 33 kilometers until it joins the Sava. Numerous hiking and cycling trails run alongside its course, inviting visitors to admire the clear turquoise water, small waterfalls, and natural pools.
The Logarska Valley is considered one of Europe’s most beautiful glacial valleys. It features unspoiled nature, alpine meadows, and striking waterfalls, including the nearly 100-meter-high Rinka Waterfall. Further information is available in our detailed guide to the Logarska Valley.
The Karawanks form the natural border between Slovenia and Austria and are among the country’s most renowned hiking areas. Stretching roughly 120 kilometers, they combine alpine scenery with rich flora and fauna as well as cultural influences.
The best-known destinations include the range’s highest peak, Hochstuhl (Stol), the imposing ridge of Košuta, and Mittagskogel (Kepa), which offers views over Lake Wörth.
The Karawanks are characterized by pronounced karst formations, rare plant species, and diverse wildlife. Numerous mountain huts also invite visitors to enjoy regional specialties. More information on Slovenian cuisine can be found in our article on traditional dishes.
The Julian Alps are located in northwestern Slovenia and extend into Italy. Large parts belong to Triglav National Park. The region is characterized by rugged peaks, deep valleys, alpine lakes, and species-rich forests.
Triglav National Park is Slovenia’s only national park and protects a unique natural landscape across approximately 84,000 hectares. It is named after Mount Triglav, the country’s highest peak at 2,864 meters.

The Soča Valley is known for the emerald-green Soča River and is among Slovenia’s most impressive natural landscapes. Waterfalls, gorges, and suspension bridges shape the scenery.
