Special toll in Romania

Last updated: 16.03.2026 Reading time: 6 Minute(s)

The special toll refers to special toll roads. These special toll routes are often tunnels or mountain pass roads and are associated with higher construction and maintenance costs. Building tunnels involves greater technical challenges, which also lead to high costs due to specialized machinery and technologies.

Who has to pay the special toll?

To use the special toll routes, an additional fee must be paid, because although these special toll routes in Romania are exempt from the vignette requirement, they are still subject to tolls. This means that regardless of whether you have already purchased a vignette, you must pay an additional amount for certain tunnels and mountain pass roads. Please note that most special toll routes can only be reached via vignette-required access roads. Therefore, it always makes sense to purchase a vignette, regardless of the special toll route. By the way: there is no distance-based toll in Romania.

Which routes are subject to the special toll?

The special toll routes in Romania include Danube crossings. The Danube flows within Romania and separates the two countries (Romania and Bulgaria) from each other. If you want to use one of the many bridges or the ferry to cross, additional fees apply.
