Hiking destinations

Are you planning a trip to Austria to experience the country's diverse natural beauty? Then our recommendations are a must-read, as Austria offers numerous breathtaking destinations nestled in the heart of the Alps that will make every nature enthusiast’s heart beat faster.

Karwendel (Part of the Northern Limestone Alps, Tyrol/Bavaria)

The Karwendel mountain range offers a wide variety of hiking trails suitable for every preference. From short walks to challenging mountain tours – there is something for everyone. A two-hour hike to the Schwarzkopf viewpoint rewards visitors with a magnificent view of Krün and the surrounding mountains. This route is accessible from April to October.

For more experienced hikers, the trail over the Wörnersattel to the Hochlandhütte near Mittenwald (approx. 7.5 hours) is highly recommended. From there, you can enjoy an incredible panoramic view of the alpine landscape. This demanding route is accessible from June to October. Those who enjoy climbing will also find excellent conditions in the Karwendel mountains.

Lechquellen Mountains (Part of the Northern Limestone Alps, Vorarlberg)

Lechquellengebirge

The Lechquellen Mountains attract hiking enthusiasts with trails of all difficulty levels – from easy walks to demanding mountain hikes. This impressive region invites you to enjoy multi-day hiking tours through a landscape rich in beautiful lakes, including the Formarinsee, Spullersee, and Körbersee. The Formarinsee was named Austria’s most beautiful place in 2015, together with the Red Wall (Rote Wand), the second-highest peak in the range. Its distinctive red limestone band gives the mountain its name and a unique appearance.

Lech is just as beautiful in winter. In addition to hiking, this region is also ideal for mountaineering and climbing adventures.

Zillertal (Western Austria, Tyrol)

Zillertal

The Zillertal is arguably one of Austria’s most famous hiking regions. The Gerlos Alpine Road offers a stunning panoramic view over the valley and its natural beauty. Please note that this road is subject to a toll fee (known as a “special toll”). You can learn more about the toll system in our guide.

Also worth a visit is the Zillertal High Road, which reaches an altitude of over 2,000 meters and provides a breathtaking view of the Alps. Please note that this road is also toll-based.

Families will particularly enjoy the “Water World” themed trail in Hintertux. Along the route, children can discover playful highlights such as a water wheel or a floating water faucet. This trail is fun for both children and adults alike. Beyond that, the region offers countless hiking paths for every skill level. One unique experience is the Yodel Hiking Trail in Königsleiten, where you can stop at various points to practice your yodeling – a fun and cultural highlight for all ages.

Another fascinating experience beyond hiking is a visit to the Spannagel Cave at the Hintertux Glacier. Accompanied by a professional guide, you can explore this impressive natural monument up close.

Hohe Tauern National Park (Carinthia, Tyrol, Salzburg)

Hohe Tauern

The Hohe Tauern National Park is a stunning high mountain landscape known for its remarkable diversity of flora and fauna, including the protected Edelweiss and the majestic bearded vulture. The park offers trails for all fitness levels across Carinthia, Salzburg, and Tyrol.

A visit to Carinthia is particularly worthwhile. Experience the pristine alpine nature while hiking at the Mölltal Glacier, accessible via Europe’s longest underground funicular – the Glacier Express. Starting at the mid-station (2,234 m), hikers are rewarded with vibrant alpine flora between July and August.

Do not miss the Carinthian Lake Region, known for its dramatic gorges, such as the Rabisch Gorge, and its countless lakes. Carinthia’s outstanding water quality makes it perfect for both summer swimming and winter spa bathing. The Wörthersee, with its turquoise waters, is especially popular and offers an ideal place to relax between hikes.

During your hikes, take the opportunity to rest in one of the many mountain huts and enjoy traditional Austrian cuisine. Remember to bring enough water, snacks, and sturdy hiking shoes. Hiking socks can help prevent blisters, and don’t forget sun protection – ideally with a hat or cap.

Please note that a certain level of fitness is required depending on the trail. Check the difficulty levels in advance and, if you are traveling with a dog, ensure the trail is suitable. The best hiking months are those with mild weather, but always keep an eye on the forecast, as thunderstorms in alpine areas can be dangerous.

Conclusion: A True Paradise for Nature Enthusiasts

Austria offers countless opportunities for hiking and exploring its magnificent alpine scenery. Whether it’s the Zillertal with the Gerlos Alpine Road, the family-friendly Water World, or the majestic Hohe Tauern National Park – every region has its own charm. Leave everyday life behind and breathe in the pure mountain air!
