Vignette requirement in the Czech Republic

In order to cover the maintenance costs for motorways and expressways, a vignette requirement applies in the Czech Republic. Since January 2021, the vignette has been available exclusively in digital form – sticker vignettes have no longer been issued since then. The digital vignette must be purchased and registered to the vehicle's license plate, regardless of whether it is a short transit or a longer journey.

Digital vignette (e-vignette) instead of sticker vignette

The former sticker vignette was affixed to the windshield and sold in stores. The digital vignette – also known as the e-vignette – is instead purchased online and registered directly to your license plate – with no sticker required. With the Europamaut flat rate, you exclusively book digital vignettes, which are valid after registration confirmation, usually within a few minutes.

Which vehicles require a vignette – and which are exempt?

The vignette requirement applies to vehicles with at least four wheels and a permissible gross weight of up to 3.5 tonnes, such as cars and motorhomes. Exempt from the vignette requirement, on the other hand, are:

  • Motorcycles and trikes are exempt from the vignette requirement.
  • Trailers are exempt from the vignette requirement.
  • Electric and hydrogen vehicles are exempt from the vignette requirement.

Trucks and heavy vehicles (over 3.5 tons)

Vehicles with a permissible total weight of more than 3.5 tonnes do not require a vignette product, but rather an electronic transmitter (On-Board Unit) for the distance-based toll system. This separate system is not part of the vignette flat rate offered here.

Fines for missing vignette

Anyone driving on motorways or expressways in the Czech Republic without a valid vignette must expect a fine of up to 5,000 Czech korunas, which is roughly 200 euros. The exact amount may vary depending on the individual case. Fixed cameras installed at so-called toll gantries are used for enforcement, matching the license plate against the database.
