Vignette requirement in Slovakia
To cover the maintenance costs for motorways and expressways, a vignette requirement applies in Slovakia. Since 2016, the vignette has been available exclusively in electronic form – adhesive vignettes have no longer been issued since then. The electronic vignette (e-známka) must be purchased and registered to the vehicle's license plate, regardless of whether it is a short transit or a longer journey.
Electronic vignette (e-známka) instead of sticker vignette
The former sticker vignette was affixed to the windshield and sold in stores. The electronic vignette, on the other hand, is purchased online and registered directly to your license plate – with no sticker required. Which vehicles need a vignette – and which are exempt?
The vignette requirement applies to vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, such as cars and motorhomes – even a motorhome over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight still only needs a vignette in Slovakia, not distance-based tolling. Exempt from the vignette requirement, however, are:
- Motorcycles are exempt from the vignette requirement.
If a trailer is towed, it requires its own separate vignette, which must be purchased separately.
Trucks and heavy vehicles (over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight)
Trucks and buses over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight do not need a vignette product; instead, they settle the toll via a distance-based system using an on-board unit (OBU) at toll gantries. This separate system is not part of the vignette flat rate offered here.
Penalties for missing vignette
Anyone driving on motorways or expressways in Slovakia without a valid vignette must expect a fine of between 50 and 500 euros; in the official procedure, the range is 150 to 500 euros. Checks are carried out using, among other things, transmitter devices at toll bridges, which automatically match the license plate with the database.
