Vignette requirement in Slovenia
To cover the maintenance costs for motorways and expressways, a vignette requirement applies in Slovenia. Since February 2022, the vignette has been available exclusively in digital form – sticker vignettes are no longer issued. The digital vignette (e-Vinjeta) must be purchased and registered to the vehicle's license plate, regardless of whether it concerns a short transit or a longer journey.
Digital vignette (e-Vinjeta) instead of sticker vignette
The former sticker vignette was affixed to the windshield and sold in stores. The digital vignette, on the other hand, is purchased online and registered directly to your license plate – with no sticker required. With the Europamaut flat rate, you exclusively book digital vignettes, which become valid after registration confirmation, usually within a few minutes.
Toll classes: Which vignette does my vehicle need?
Slovenia distinguishes the vignette requirement not only by weight, but by toll classes based on the vehicle's front axle height:
- Toll class 1: Motorcycles.
- Toll class 2A: cars and motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes with a front axle height below 1.3 meters – most cars, estate cars, and SUVs.
- Toll class 2B: Vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes with a front axle height from 1.3 meters, such as larger vans and motorhomes.
- Trailers are exempt from the vignette requirement.
Heavy vehicles (over 3.5 tonnes)
Vehicles with a permissible total weight of more than 3.5 tonnes do not require a vignette product, but are subject to a distance-based electronic toll system (DarsGo). This separate system is not part of the vignette flat rate offered here.
Fines for missing vignette
Anyone driving on motorways or expressways in Slovenia without a valid vignette must expect a fine of between 300 and 800 euros. The exact amount can vary depending on the individual case. Fixed cameras as well as mobile toll enforcement vehicles are used for checks, matching the license plate with the database.
