Vignette requirement in Hungary

To cover the maintenance costs of motorways and expressways, a toll sticker (vignette) requirement applies in Hungary. Since January 1, 2008, the vignette has been available exclusively in digital form – adhesive vignettes have no longer been issued since then. The digital vignette (e-Matrica) must be purchased and registered to the vehicle's license plate, regardless of whether it is a short transit or a longer journey.

Digital vignette (e-Matrica) instead of sticker vignette

The former sticker vignette was affixed to the windshield and sold in stores. The digital vignette – also called e-Matrica – is instead purchased online and registered directly to your license plate – with no sticker required. With the Europe Toll Flat Rate, you exclusively book digital vignettes, which become valid after registration confirmation, usually within a few minutes.

Which toll sticker does my vehicle need?

Hungary differentiates the vignette requirement according to vehicle classes:

  • Category D1: Cars and motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW with up to 7 seats – most cars, station wagons and SUVs.
  • Category D1M: Motorcycles.
  • Category D2: Motorhomes over 3.5 t GVW.

Trucks and buses (over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight)

Vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight (trucks, buses) do not require a vignette product, but instead settle the toll via the distance-based HU-GO system – using a route ticket or a registered on-board unit (OBU). This separate system is not part of the vignette flat rate offered here.

Fines for missing vignette

Anyone driving on motorways or expressways in Hungary without a valid vignette faces a fine of 16,220 forints, equivalent to around 41 euros. If the fine is not paid within 60 days, it quadruples to 64,850 forints (around 165 euros). After entering a toll road, there is a 60-minute window to purchase a vignette retroactively. Fixed cameras are used for enforcement, automatically matching the license plate with the database.
