Vehicle Classes Bulgaria

If you want to travel to Bulgaria, then you need to purchase a vignette or pay a distance-based toll in order to use the entire road network. We will give you an overview of whether you only need to order a vignette for your vehicle or need to purchase a transmitter device for the distance-based toll at the toll stations on site.

The different vehicle classes

There are various vehicle classes that fall under the vignette requirement. In general, however, vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight require a vignette, while vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight must pay a distance-based toll. However, there is one exception.

Motorcycles

Motorcycles are the exception, as when travelling by motorcycle you neither need to present a vignette nor pay the distance-based toll.

Cars

If you want to travel to Bulgaria with your car, then you need a vignette. The distance-based toll does not apply to you.

Cars with trailer

If you want to travel to Bulgaria with your car and a combination (trailer), then you also need a vignette. As long as your car together with the trailer weighs under 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, a vignette for the car is sufficient. Should your vehicle together with the trailer be over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, then you need an additional vignette for the trailer. However, the distance-based toll does not apply to you even with a total weight over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight.

Motorhomes

If you want to travel to Bulgaria with a motorhome, you need a vignette regardless of the weight of your motorhome. The distance-based toll does not apply to you even with a total weight over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight.

Trucks

Commercial vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight must pay a distance-based toll. Due to the permissible total weight of 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, this includes most trucks. The amount of toll to be paid varies depending on the vehicle, as it is based on the kilometres driven, the Euro emission class, the number of axles, and the type of road. Payment is made either in advance by means of a route card (route pass/route plan) or by an electronic transmitter device (on-board unit) or a GPS tracker.

Attention: Special toll routes (route toll)

Please note when travelling that there are special toll routes in Bulgaria. Regardless of an already purchased vignette or payment of a distance-based toll, additional fees apply for the use of special toll routes. The special toll routes include the Danube crossings between Bulgaria and Romania.
