Vehicle Classes Bulgaria

If you want to travel to Bulgaria, you must purchase a vignette or pay a distance-based toll in order to use the entire road network. We provide you with an overview of whether you simply need to order a vignette for your vehicle or whether you need a route ticket or a transmitter device from a toll service provider for the distance-based toll.

The different vehicle classes

There are various vehicle classes that are subject to the vignette requirement. In general, however, vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight require a vignette, while vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight must pay a distance-based toll. However, there is one exception.

Motorcycles

Motorcycles are the exception, as you neither need to present a vignette nor pay the distance-based toll when travelling by motorcycle.

Cars

If you want to travel to Bulgaria with your car, you need a vignette. The distance-based toll does not apply to you.

Cars with trailer

If you want to travel to Bulgaria with your car together with a trailer, you also need a vignette. As long as your car together with the trailer weighs under 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, a vignette for the car is sufficient. If your vehicle together with the trailer is over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, you will need an additional vignette for the trailer. However, the distance-based toll does not apply to you even with a total weight over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight.

Motorhomes

If you want to travel to Bulgaria with a motorhome and it is registered in the vehicle registration document as category M1, you need a vignette regardless of the weight of your motorhome. The distance-based toll then does not apply to you even with a total weight over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight. Motorhomes over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight with a different registration, for example N2 or N3, pay the distance-based toll instead.

Trucks

Commercial vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight must pay a distance-based toll. Due to the permissible gross vehicle weight of 3.5 t, this includes most trucks. The amount of toll payable varies depending on the vehicle, as it is based on the kilometres driven, the Euro emission class, the number of axles and the type of road. Payment is made either in advance using a route card (route pass/route plan) or via an electronic transmitter device (on-board unit) or a GPS tracker.

Please note: special toll routes (route toll)

Please note when planning your trip that there are special toll routes in Bulgaria. Regardless of an already purchased vignette or payment of a distance-based toll, additional fees apply for the use of special toll routes. The special toll routes include the Vidin-Calafat Danube Bridge as well as the Ruse-Giurgiu Bridge in the direction of Romania. The Romanian bridge toll in the direction of Bulgaria will be abolished as of 1 October 2026.
