Do I need a vignette for Bulgaria?
What is the Bulgaria e-vignette and where is it valid?
Since 1 January 2019, the digital Bulgaria vignette (in Bulgarian “Vinetka”, officially e-vignette) has replaced the sticker vignette, which is no longer issued. The Bulgarian vignette is registered online to your license plate, with no sticker at all, and you do not have to show anything during a check. It is valid on the A1 to A6 motorways and on a network of class I, II and III roads specified by the government, even if you are just passing through. Municipal roads are not part of the toll network. A separate bridge toll also applies to the Danube bridges to Romania.
Which vehicles need a vignette?
The vignette requirement applies to vehicles with at least four wheels up to 3.5 t GVW, i.e. cars, vans and vehicle combinations with a caravan. Motorhomes in vehicle class M1 (stated in the vehicle registration document) need the vignette regardless of their weight:
| Vehicle | Vignette | Special toll |
|---|---|---|
| Motorcycle | Vignette Not required | Special toll May apply |
| Car / van (up to 3.5 t GVW) | Vignette Required | Special toll May apply |
| Vehicle combination with trailer | Vignette Required | Special toll May apply |
| Motorhome (class M1) | Vignette Required | Special toll May apply |
| Truck / bus (over 3.5 t GVW) | Vignette No vignette | Special toll May apply |
Motorcycles are exempt; the requirement only applies to vehicles with at least four wheels. If a combination of towing vehicle and trailer weighs more than 3.5 t GVW in total, you additionally need a vignette for the trailer, which costs the same. Trucks and buses over 3.5 t GVW pay the distance-based toll per kilometre driven instead of the vignette; it is not part of the Vignette Flat Rate. A special toll only applies if you use one of the Danube bridges to Romania.

Until 31 July 2026, the 7-day vignette cost 7.67 € and the annual vignette 49.60 €. The prices apply to vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW and to motorhomes in class M1; the vignette for a trailer costs the same. When buying directly from BGTOLL, the start of validity can be chosen up to 30 days in advance. The Vignette Flat Rate refers only to the 7-day vignette for cars. The price of the vignette to which the Vignette Flat Rate refers is highlighted in green.
When is the e-vignette valid and how is it checked?
The digital vignette is linked to the license plate and is valid from the selected start. At europamaut, it is registered once the registration confirmation has been received, usually within a few minutes. You choose the start time when ordering the Vignette Flat Rate and later when activating further vignettes in your account management. Checks are carried out by the National Toll Administration, the Ministry of the Interior and customs based on the license plate: with fixed cameras, cameras in enforcement vehicles and during police checks. The free validity check further down shows whether a valid vignette is registered for your license plate.
What are the penalties for driving without a valid vignette?
Anyone driving on a toll road without a valid vignette can settle the offence by paying the compensation fee of 46.50 € (since 1 August 2026), either immediately or within 14 days of the electronic notice. If you do not pay, a fine of 153.39 € (300 leva by law) follows. Therefore, buy the vignette before you drive onto the motorway.
