Vehicle Classes of Slovenia

If you are planning to travel to Slovenia, you will need either a vignette or you must pay a distance-based toll in order to cover Slovenia’s road charges. Below you will find an overview explaining whether your vehicle requires a vignette or whether you must purchase an on-board unit for distance-based tolling at local toll stations.

Do You Need a Digital Vignette?

In general, vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight are subject to the vignette requirement, while vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight must pay a distance-based toll. However, certain exceptions apply depending on the type of vehicle.

Motorcycles

To use the Slovenian road network, motorcycles require a digital vignette.

Passenger Cars

Passenger cars also require a digital vignette to use the Slovenian road network. Vehicles with a front axle height of more than 1.3 m are charged at a higher toll category.

Combinations: Car and Trailer

If the total permissible weight of the combination consisting of a car and trailer is no more than 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, only a digital vignette for the car is required. If the total weight exceeds 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, the vignette requirement no longer applies and a distance-based toll must be paid.

Motorhomes

Motorhomes up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight are subject to the vignette requirement. Motorhomes with a gross vehicle weight over 3.5 t must pay a distance-based toll, and a vignette is not required.

Commercial Vehicles Over 3.5 t Gross Vehicle Weight

As a general rule, vehicles with a gross vehicle weight over 3.5 t are required to pay a distance-based toll. These vehicles are not subject to the vignette requirement.

Vehicle Classes Subject to the Vignette Requirement

Vehicles subject to the vignette requirement are assigned to different vehicle classes. The price of the digital vignette varies depending on the respective class.

• Class 1: Motorcycles
• Class 2a: Vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight with a front axle height of less than 1.3 m, as well as motorhomes up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight with entry SA in the registration certificate Part I and permanently installed living equipment
• Class 2b: Vehicles under 3.5 t gross vehicle weight with a front axle height of more than 1.3 m

Attention: Special Toll Section

The Karawanks Tunnel is classified as a special toll section. This means that additional fees apply for its use, regardless of whether a digital vignette has been purchased or a distance-based toll has been paid. The tunnel connects Austria and Slovenia and is frequently used to cross the border. Although the Karawanks Tunnel itself is not subject to the vignette requirement, it is accessed via vignette-required roads. Travelers entering Slovenia from Austria and intending to use the Karawanks Tunnel should therefore take the additional tunnel charges into account and ensure that they have a valid digital vignette for the access roads.
