Vehicle Classes in Slovenia

Last updated: 23.02.2026 Reading time: 2 Minute(s)

If you are planning to travel to Slovenia, you will need either a vignette or must pay a distance-based toll to cover the applicable toll charges. Below you will find an overview of whether your vehicle requires a vignette or whether you need to purchase a transmitter for the distance-based toll at the toll stations on site.

Do You Need a Digital Vignette?

As a general rule, vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW are subject to the vignette requirement, while vehicles over 3.5 t GVW must pay a distance-based toll. However, exceptions may apply depending on the type of vehicle.

Motorcycles

A digital vignette is required for motorcycles to use the Slovenian road network.

Cars

A digital vignette is also required for cars to use the Slovenian road network. Vehicles with a height of more than 1.3 m at the front axle are subject to a higher toll category.

Combinations: Car and Trailer

If the permissible gross weight of the car and trailer combination is a maximum of 3.5 t GVW, only a digital vignette for the car is required. However, if the total weight exceeds 3.5 t GVW, the vignette requirement no longer applies and a distance-based toll must be paid.

Motorhomes

Motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW are subject to the vignette requirement. Motorhomes with a permissible gross weight over 3.5 t GVW, on the other hand, must pay a distance-based toll; a vignette is not required in this case.

Commercial Vehicles over 3.5 t GVW

Vehicles with a permissible gross weight over 3.5 t GVW are generally required to pay a distance-based toll. A vignette is not available for this vehicle class.

Vehicle Classes within the Vignette Requirement

Within the vignette requirement, vehicles are assigned to different classes. The cost of the digital vignette also varies depending on the respective vehicle class.

  • Class 1: Motorcycles
  • Class 2a: Motor vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW with a height of less than 1.3 m at the front axle, as well as motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW with the entry SA in the vehicle registration certificate Part I and fixed living fixtures
  • Class 2b: Motor vehicles under 3.5 t GVW with a height of more than 1.3 m at the front axle

Attention: Special Toll Route

The Karawanken Tunnel is a special toll route. Additional charges apply for using this tunnel, regardless of whether a digital vignette has been purchased or a distance-based toll has been paid. The tunnel connects Austria with Slovenia and is frequently used for border crossings. Although the Karawanken Tunnel itself is not subject to the vignette requirement, the access roads lead over vignette-required routes. Travellers coming from Austria who wish to use the Karawanken Tunnel should therefore take into account both the additional tunnel charges and purchase a digital vignette for the access routes.
