Vehicle Classes in Slovenia
If you want to travel to Slovenia, you need either a vignette or must pay a distance-based toll to settle the applicable toll charges. Below you will find an overview of whether a vignette is required for your vehicle or whether you need a DarsGo device for the distance-based toll, which is available at DarsGo service points.
Do you need a digital vignette?
As a general rule, vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight are subject to the vignette requirement, while vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight must pay a distance-based toll. However, exceptions may apply depending on the vehicle type.
Motorcycles
A digital vignette is required for motorcycles to use Slovenian motorways and expressways.
Cars
Cars also require a digital vignette to use Slovenian motorways and expressways. Vehicles with a height of 1.30 m or more above the front axle belong to the more expensive toll class 2B.
Combinations: cars and trailers
For combinations of a car and a trailer, the towing vehicle is decisive. If the permissible gross weight of the car is a maximum of 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, a digital vignette is required for the car, regardless of the weight of the trailer. This also applies if the combination as a whole weighs more than 3.5 t gross vehicle weight. A distance-based toll is only payable if the towing vehicle itself has a permissible gross weight of over 3.5 t.
Motorhomes
Motorhomes up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight are subject to the vignette requirement. Motorhomes with a permissible gross weight over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, on the other hand, must pay a distance-based toll; a vignette is not required in this case.
Commercial vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight
Vehicles with a permissible gross weight over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight are generally subject to the obligation to pay a distance-based toll. A vignette is not provided for this vehicle class.
Vehicle classes within the vignette requirement
Within the vignette requirement, vehicles are assigned to different classes. The cost of the digital vignette also varies depending on the respective vehicle class.
Class 1: single-track motor vehicles (motorcycles)
Class 2A: two-track motor vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight with a height above the front axle of no more than 1.30 m, as well as motorhomes up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight with the entry SA in Part I of the registration certificate and fixed living installations, regardless of height
Class 2B: two-track motor vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight with a height above the front axle of 1.30 m or more (e.g. tall vans and transporters). Which models belong to class 2B can be found in DARS's list of measured vehicles; vehicles not listed belong to class 2A. Class 2B costs twice as much as class 2A (7 days: €32.00 instead of €16.00) and cannot be booked via the flat rate.
Attention: special toll route
The Karawanken Tunnel is a special toll route. Using this tunnel incurs additional fees, regardless of whether a digital vignette has been purchased or a distance-based toll has been paid. The tunnel connects Austria with Slovenia and is frequently used to cross the border. Although the Karawanken Tunnel itself is not subject to the vignette requirement, the access roads run over sections that are. Between the tunnel and the Hrušica junction you do not need a Slovenian vignette, as this section is covered by the tunnel toll. Anyone continuing on the motorway beyond Hrušica needs a digital vignette.
