What is a toll (obligation)?

Most countries in Europe charge toll fees. There is a so-called toll obligation. But what does this mean? So-called toll fees are charged for the use of many motorways and expressways as well as tunnels and bridges. The money collected through tolls is, for example, invested in the road network. This ensures a smooth journey on your way to your holiday.

• Environmental protection: expansion of noise barriers or measures to reduce emissions

How is the toll collected?

In general, the toll can be collected in various forms. These include the vignette obligation, the distance-based toll and the special toll.

In Turkey there is no classic vignette obligation. Instead, an electronic toll system (HGS – Hızlı Geçiş Sistemi) is used. This works with an HGS sticker or an HGS card. When passing through the toll station, the credit is automatically deducted. The amount of the toll varies depending on the vehicle class and the distance driven. Accordingly, the toll is collected as a distance-based toll.

Which roads are subject to tolls?

In Turkey, all motorways are subject to tolls. In addition, fees apply for certain bridges and tunnels.

Special provisions

Vehicles with an axle spacing of more than 3.2 m are charged a higher toll. The same applies to combinations with tandem axles. Motorhomes are classified differently depending on the axle spacing.

Vehicle classes

Vehicles are divided into the following categories:

• Category 1: 2-axle vehicles with axle spacing under 3.2 m

• Category 2: 2-axle vehicles with axle spacing of 3.2 m or more

• Category 3: vehicles or combinations with 3 axles

• Category 4: vehicles or combinations with 4 or 5 axles

• Category 5: vehicles or combinations with 6 or more axles

• Category 6: motorcycles

• Category 7: motorcycles

Payment

In Turkey, the toll is mainly paid electronically via the HGS system. HGS stickers or cards are available at Turkish Post (PTT) branches, service stations, petrol stations and toll stations, where they can also be topped up. The HGS system is vehicle-bound and non-transferable.
