Most countries in Europe charge toll fees. There is a so-called toll requirement. But what does that mean? For the use of many motorways and expressways as well as tunnels and bridges, toll fees are charged. The money collected through tolls is, for example, invested in the road network. This helps ensure a smooth journey on your way to your holiday destination. The primary areas of investment are infrastructure, traffic management and road safety, as well as environmental protection measures.
There is no nationwide toll system for cars and motorhomes on Latvia’s motorways and expressways. However, there is a city toll for the city of Jūrmala. In addition, a truck toll in the form of a vignette requirement applies to trucks with a weight of 3 t or more on state and regional roads.
Accordingly, owners of a truck (from 3 t) must purchase an e-vignette for Latvia online. Motorhomes are exempt from the vignette requirement regardless of their weight, as long as they are not registered as trucks. If your motorhome is also registered as a truck, you must purchase an e-vignette for it.
The resort town of Jūrmala is located on Latvia’s coast and is subject to tolls. If you want to drive to Jūrmala, you must pay a city toll / environmental protection fee. This toll fee applies to all vehicle types, and the amount is the same for all vehicles, i.e., it is not divided into different vehicle classes. The city toll is paid by purchasing a day pass.
You can buy the day pass on site from a machine or at the tourist information office. You can also purchase the day pass online or via an app. Pure electric cars and vehicles used to transport people with disabilities are exempt from the city toll.
