Most countries in Europe charge toll fees. There is a so-called toll requirement. But what does this mean? For the use of many motorways and expressways as well as tunnels and bridges, toll fees are charged. The funds generated from tolls are, for example, invested in the road network. This ensures a smooth journey on your way to your holiday destination. The primary areas for investment are infrastructure, traffic management, road safety, and environmental protection measures.
In Lithuania, tolls exist in the form of a vignette requirement for trucks, vans and buses. In addition, there is an environmental toll in the Curonian Spit and a city toll in Kaunas (and Vilnius).
For commercial vehicles (vehicle classes N1–N3) and buses (M2–M3), a vignette is required on motorways and national roads. This means you need an electronic vignette, which you can purchase online. Cars and motorhomes are exempt from the vignette requirement as long as they are not registered in the vehicle classes mentioned above (commercial vehicles and buses).
Vehicles must pay an environmental protection fee (also called an environmental toll) when entering the Curonian Spit. Please note that this environmental toll applies to all vehicles, and the amount depends on the vehicle type and the travel period (20 June–20 August and 21 August–19 June). Vehicles are divided into the following categories:
Pure electric vehicles are temporarily exempt from the environmental protection fee (21 August–19 June). The environmental toll is paid once and can be paid at the Alksnynė checkpoint (with cash or bank card), online, or via app (Unipark).
Currently, the city toll applies to the two cities of Kaunas and Vilnius. However, additional cities in Lithuania are expected to follow in the coming years.
The city toll in Kaunas for the low-emission zone (Sumažintos taršos zona, STZ) in the old town of Kaunas applies to all vehicles (except motorcycles). The city toll is charged year-round and around the clock. You can pay the city toll at parking meters on site, online, or via app (Unipark or carOne). Fully electric vehicles and vehicles transporting people with disabilities may apply for an exemption from the city toll. You must apply for this exemption online.
In addition, a low-emission zone (Mažos taršos zona) exists in the old town of Vilnius. This zone has existed since January 2025, but no fee has been charged yet (as of 02 March 2026). This may change once the vehicles subject to payment are defined. Therefore, check before your trip whether a fee applies.
