What is a toll (obligation)?

Most countries in Europe charge toll fees. There is a so-called toll obligation. But what does that mean? For the use of many motorways and expressways as well as tunnels and bridges, so-called toll fees are charged. The money generated by the toll is invested, for example, in the road network. This allows you to have a smooth journey on your way to your holiday. The primary areas for investment are infrastructure, traffic management and road safety, as well as environmental protection measures.

• Traffic safety and traffic management: new technologies such as intelligent traffic systems or toll bridges

• Environmental protection: expansion of noise barriers or measures to reduce emissions

Are toll fees charged in Finland?

In Finland, no toll fees are charged. This means you can use all routes free of charge and don't need to worry about fines. However, please note that on your way to Finland you may pass through other countries that charge a toll for using the road network. On the classic route via Scandinavia, for example, toll fees apply on the Öresund Bridge between Denmark and Sweden as well as on some Norwegian roads and tunnels, and the Baltic states also partially require a vignette for commercial vehicles.
