What Is a Toll (Requirement)?

Most countries in Europe charge toll fees. There is a so-called toll obligation. But what does that mean? For the use of many motorways, expressways, as well as tunnels and bridges, toll fees are charged. The revenue generated from tolls is, for example, invested in the road network. This ensures a smooth journey on your way to your holiday destination.

  • Infrastructure: Construction and maintenance of roads and motorways

  • Traffic safety and traffic management: Intelligent traffic systems or toll bridges

  • Environmental protection: Measures to reduce emissions

How Is the Toll Collected?

In Serbia, there is no vignette requirement. Instead, a distance-based toll is charged on all motorways (exception: motorways near Belgrade) and expressways. The amount of the toll depends on the distance travelled as well as the vehicle class.

Regulations and Vehicle Classes

Regulations

All motor vehicles are subject to tolls on motorways and expressways. Classification is based on vehicle height, weight and number of axles.

  • Cars: Classified according to height at the front axle or total vehicle height

Payment of the Toll

Manual Payment

When entering the motorway, you take a ticket which must be paid when exiting. Payment is possible in cash or by credit/debit card. If you pay in euros, you will receive change in Serbian dinars.

Electronic Payment

Frequent drivers can use a transponder attached to the windscreen. The toll is automatically deducted from the prepaid balance.
