What is a toll (obligation)?
Most countries in Europe charge toll fees. There is a so-called toll obligation. But what does that mean? So-called toll fees are charged for the use of many motorways and expressways as well as tunnels and bridges. The amounts of money generated by the toll are invested, for example, in the road network. This ensures a smooth journey on your way to your holiday. The primary areas for investment are infrastructure, traffic management and road safety as well as environmental protection measures.

Road safety and traffic management: new technologies such as intelligent transport systems or toll gantries
Environmental protection: expansion of noise barriers or measures to reduce exhaust emissions
How is the toll collected?
In general, the toll can be collected in various forms. These include the vignette requirement, the distance-based toll and the special toll.
In Spain there is no vignette requirement, but a motorway toll. The reason for this is that the motorway network is mainly operated by various shareholders, meaning that the use of the privately operated "Autopista" (AP) is subject to a fee. The motorway toll is based on the distance driven (distance-based toll) and must be paid at the toll stations. In addition, the toll costs can also vary depending on the time of day, day of the week or public holiday.
The urban motorways and bypasses (including in Barcelona, Bilbao, Valencia and Alicante) as well as the state expressways are largely toll-free. Likewise, the public "Autovías" (A) are usually free of charge. However, there are also toll public autovías, such as the A-636, which is subject to an electronic toll. Accordingly, you pay the toll fee via the free-flow system.
Regulations and vehicle classes
Regulations
Special regulations apply to the following two motor vehicles:
Combinations: Single-axle trailers without twin tyres are not subject to additional toll fees. However, combinations with twin tyres are tolled differently.
Motorhomes: If you drive a motorhome with twin tyres, it will be tolled at a higher rate regardless of the gross vehicle weight (GVW).
Vehicle classes
On most motorways operated by shareholders (variable depending on the operator), vehicle classes are distinguished as follows:
Ligeros: Motorcycles (with or without sidecar) and motor vehicles with up to 3 axles without twin tyres (this includes cars with or without a trailer and motorhomes without twin tyres).
Pesados 1: Motor vehicles with twin tyres (this includes cars with a twin-tyred trailer and motorhomes with twin tyres)
Pesados 2: Motor vehicles with 4 or more axles (this includes cars with a 2-axle or multi-axle trailer, of which at least one axle has twin tyres)
What does twin tyres mean? Twin tyres means that two tyres are mounted side by side on one axle per side. This means there is a double tyre configuration. You can often find these twin tyres on vans, trucks or motorhomes, and they enable a higher load capacity or better stability of the vehicle.
Paying the toll
You can pay the toll at the toll stations or (where available) via the free-flow system. So far, the toll is usually paid at the typical toll stations. This payment can be made with cash or card. The electronic system (such as Télépéage/Via-T) enables automatic passage and payment using a transponder (electronic transmitting device). The transponder is attached to the windscreen, you drive through the correspondingly marked lane, and the toll is then automatically debited from your stored payment method. If you use the route unregistered, you risk fines.
In addition, the public motorway A-636 already has the modern free-flow system (or camera system), which enables license plate recognition, so that the toll can be debited automatically. To do this, you must register your motor vehicle online in advance to enable the toll to be debited.

Is there a vignette requirement in Spain?
No. There is no vignette requirement in Spain. Instead, a distance-based toll is charged on individual route sections.
How does the highway toll work in Spain?

What does "free-flow tolling" mean in Spain?
With free-flow, there are no barriers or toll booths. Instead, the vehicle is electronically recorded as it passes through (e.g. via license plate recognition and/or a Télépéage transponder), and the toll is billed afterwards.
Free-flow on the A-636: Do I need to register in advance?
On free-flow sections (e.g. A-636), the toll is collected electronically via license plate. Payment generally requires prior registration of the license plate and linking it to a bank card (depending on the operator/regulations). Please check the information for the respective route before starting your journey.
Do I necessarily need a transponder for Free-Flow?
Not necessarily. Depending on the operator, Free-Flow can work via license plate + registration/payment method. However, a Via-T/Télépéage transponder can simplify billing if the route supports Télépéage.
What happens if I use a free-flow route without registering?
Depending on the operator, subsequent payment may be required. If the toll is not paid within the deadline, additional costs or fines may apply. Please note the signs along the route and the operator information.
How are vehicle classes classified in Spain?
The classification can vary depending on the operator. A distinction is often made between Ligeros (light vehicles) and Pesados (heavy vehicles). Criteria include, for example, number of axles and whether dual tires are present.
What does twin tires mean?
Twin tires mean that two tires mounted side by side are fitted per side on an axle (dual tires). This often increases load capacity and stability (e.g. for vans, trucks, or some motorhomes) and can affect the vehicle class.
