What is a toll (obligation)?
Most countries in Europe charge tolls. There is a so-called toll obligation. But what does this mean? For the use of many motorways and expressways as well as tunnels and bridges, so-called tolls are charged. The money raised through the toll is invested, for example, in the road network. This ensures a smooth journey on your way to your holiday. The primary areas for investment are infrastructure, traffic management and road safety, as well as environmental protection measures.

How is the toll charged in Denmark?
In Denmark there is no general toll obligation. This means you do not need to pay a distance-based toll or purchase a vignette. Instead, a special toll is only charged on two specific routes. This special toll applies to all vehicles that cross these routes. The two special toll routes in Denmark are the Øresund Bridge and the Great Belt Bridge (Storebælt). The amount of the special toll varies depending on vehicle type, vehicle height and vehicle length. In addition, the fee for motorhomes is also determined by the total length (up to 6 m/from 6 m/up to 10 m). However, the individual vehicle classes differ depending on the bridge.
Øresund Bridge
Vehicle classes
The Øresund Bridge connects Denmark with Sweden. If you want to use the Øresund Bridge, you must pay a special toll. The amount of the special toll differs depending on the vehicle class. The following vehicle classes apply:
Cars and motorhomes up to 6 m
Cars up to 6 m with trailer/caravan up to 15 m total length, motorhomes from 6 to 10 m, and vans up to 9 m
Cars with trailer/caravan over 15 m, motorhomes over 10 m
Motorcycle
Paying the special toll
You can pay the special toll on site (with Danish or Swedish kroner) in the yellow lanes. Payment on site by credit card is also possible. For this, you must use the blue lanes. There are also green lanes, where the fee can be paid electronically. For this, you need a transponder (transmitter device, e.g. from ØresundPAY or BroBizz). Keep your payment receipt for safety and check whether your vehicle has been classified correctly. An incorrect classification can also be disputed afterwards.
If you would prefer to pay the special toll in advance, this is also possible. You can pay the special toll online in advance and will then receive an online ticket, so that your vehicle's number plate is recognised. This means you no longer need to stop to pay on site.
Great Belt Bridge (Storebælt)
Vehicle classes
The Great Belt Bridge connects the island of Funen with the island of Zealand. If you want to use the Great Belt Bridge, you must pay a special toll. The amount of the special toll differs depending on the vehicle class. The following vehicle classes apply:
Cars: under 3 m in length
Cars, cars with trailer, motorhomes: up to 6 m total length and under 3.5 t gross vehicle weight
Cars, cars with trailer: over 6 m total length, under 2.7 m height and under 3.5 t gross vehicle weight
Motorhomes: from 6 m to 10 m in length and under 3.5 t gross vehicle weight with a Storebælt motorhome contract
Motorhomes: over 6 m up to 10 m in length and over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight
Motorhomes: over 10 m and over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight
Motorcycles: under 3 m in length
Motorcycles: with trailer, 3-6 m total length
Paying the special toll
As on the Øresund Bridge, you can pay with cash in the yellow lane. However, on the Great Belt Bridge, euro notes are also accepted. Please note, however, that you will receive your change in Danish kroner. In the blue lane, on the other hand, you can only pay by credit card. The green lanes are used for the electronic/automatic payment of the special toll fees using a transponder (transmitter device) or number plate recognition.
