Why do you have to pay toll charges?
Most countries in Europe charge toll fees, as there is a general toll obligation. But what does that mean? So-called toll fees are charged for the use of many motorways and expressways as well as tunnels and bridges. The money collected through tolls is invested, for example, in the road network. This ensures a smooth journey on your way to your holiday destination. The primary areas of investment are infrastructure, traffic management and road safety, as well as environmental protection measures.

How is the toll collected?
In general, tolls can be collected in various forms. These include the vignette requirement, the distance-based toll and the special toll.
In North Macedonia, there is a toll obligation in the form of a distance-based toll. Depending on the vehicle class, the amount of toll to be paid at the toll station may vary. Unlike other countries (such as Austria or Switzerland), North Macedonia has no vignette requirement. The toll obligation in North Macedonia applies only to certain motorways. Accordingly, a distance-based toll is charged on almost all sections of the motorways A1, A2, A3 and A4. The expressways and national roads are currently toll-free.
Regulations and vehicle classes

In North Macedonia, specific regulations apply to motor vehicles and their classification into vehicle classes:
Cars: Motor vehicles with a height of more than 1.3 m at the front axle are charged a higher toll.
Combinations: Combinations connected to a towing vehicle with a height of more than 1.3 m at the front axle are charged a higher toll.
Motorhomes: are tolled according to the number of axles, regardless of the permissible total weight (short: GVW).
Vehicle classes
The various motor vehicles are divided into the following vehicle classes:
Class IA: Motorcycles
Class IB: Motor vehicles with two axles and a height of less than 1.3 m at the front axle. This can include cars.
Class II: Motor vehicles with more than two axles and a height of less than 1.3 m at the front axle. This can include cars with trailers.
Class III: Motor vehicles with two or three axles and a height of more than 1.3 m at the front axle. This can include motorhomes or motorhomes with trailers.
Class IV: Motor vehicles with more than three axles and a height of more than 1.3 m at the front axle.
Payment of toll fees
The toll in North Macedonia can be paid either at the toll stations or electronically. The toll for the motorways A1, A2, A3 and A4 can, for example, be paid in cash (in the national currency Denar) at the toll stations. Payment in Euros is also possible at some toll stations, although the toll fee will be higher due to the exchange rate. You can also pay at the toll stations with credit or debit cards.
Electronic payment is currently only possible on the A1 (also known as Corridor 10). For this you need a contactless smart card (prepaid card) or a transmitter device. Accordingly, you must still stop at the toll stations on all other routes to pay the toll fee.
