What is a toll (obligation)?
Most countries in Europe charge toll fees. There is a so-called toll obligation. But what does that mean? So-called toll fees are charged for the use of many motorways and expressways as well as tunnels and bridges. The money collected through tolls is invested in, for example, the road network. This allows for a smooth journey on your way to your holiday. The primary areas for investment are infrastructure, traffic management and road safety, as well as environmental protection measures.
Infrastructure: construction and maintenance of roads and motorways
Traffic safety and traffic management: new technologies such as intelligent transport systems or toll gantries
Environmental protection: expansion of noise barriers or measures to reduce emissions
How is the toll charged in Luxembourg?
In Luxembourg, only a toll obligation applies for commercial vehicles with an F.1 weight of 12 t or more. This toll obligation applies to all motorways and selected expressways in Luxembourg. Commercial vehicles under an F.1 weight of 12 t and vehicles carrying passengers are exempt from the toll obligation.
AGES (AGES TOLL I GmbH) is responsible for the collection and administration of the toll for trucks (commercial vehicles with an F.1 weight of 12 t or more). The amount of the toll fee depends on the number of axles and the CO2 emission class, and the billing of toll fees is enabled by the Eurovignette system.
