Most countries in Europe charge toll fees. Fees are charged for using many motorways, expressways, tunnels and bridges. The revenue is used, among other things, to expand and maintain the road network as well as to finance road safety measures.
In principle, tolls can be collected as a vignette, a distance-based toll or a special toll. In Poland, there is no traditional vignette requirement. Instead, certain motorway sections are subject to a distance-based toll.
This means that privately financed concession motorways are subject to tolls for all motor vehicles, while vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight (GVW) may use publicly financed motorways free of charge. As a result, all vehicles over 3.5 t are subject to tolls on all motorways (both privately and publicly financed). If you would like to learn more about concession motorways, feel free to take a look at our guide.
For vehicles up to 3.5 t (e.g. cars and motorcycles), tolls generally apply only on privately operated motorway sections. Depending on the route, payment is made at toll stations (cash or credit card) or electronically.
Vehicles over 3.5 t in Poland are subject to tolls on all motorways, expressways and many national roads. Payment is made either based on distance travelled or electronically via the e-TOLL system. You can find more information about the e-TOLL system in our guide.
Motorcycles with trailers as well as combinations with twin tyres or tandem axles are classified in a higher category on privately financed motorways. Combinations and motorhomes over 3.5 t must use the electronic e-TOLL system on public roads.
